How 'Dirty Harry' Turned Commie (Frank Rich is Jealous of a Real Man..)

It's interesting that in Rich's diatribe against those who disapproved of this movie (the Right Wing) he deliberately ignored the one group that has been most vocal: Disabled Americans. In fact, from what I've read, most the resistance has come from these people and their group "Not Dead Yet."

This is hardly a right-wing group and yet they also found much to dislike in the message that was being sent by this movie. Among the other critics, was Kalman Kaplan, a professor of psychology at Wayne State University, who wrote a letter of protest to Roger Ebert's glowing review:

"My disagreement is with what you haven't discussed: the 90 degree turn after Maggie's tragic accident into a naive...factually incorrect, out-of-date and dangerous characterization of a disabled person, and its implicit advocacy...of mercy-killing of the disabled." He compared Million Dollar Baby to propaganda films made in Germany under Hitler.

It's sad that instead of condemning the college professor...one who invoked Hitler, or those most intimately familiar with extreme disabilities (the disabled), Frank Rich found it necessary to again inject partisan politics into an issue that is not partisan.

If you liked "Cider House Rules" you'll love "$MM Baby" Different story, different actors, different situations, same con job.

I have to say that for the first time, and probably the last, I agree with Frank Rich. The criticism is just over the top. It's a story. It leaves you to make your own decisions.

Whatever... One Million Dollary Baby is a wonderful movie. And Clint Eastwood rocks. Period.

Unfortunately, Rich's criticism isn't genuine. He attacked "Republicans" while failing to pay attention to those whose voices were much more critical...and relevant. Sadly, because those voices belong to others who generally support Democrats, he ignored them and used this as a reason to beat-up on the right-wing. Just another reason why I can never support anything this guy writes.

I've not seen it. But anything with Clint Eastwood in it, is on my viewing list.

And I like Hilary Swank too. She's not an actress who capitalised fully on her last 'Oscar' and just took 'any old role' in the next big budget movie. She's a bit more discerning in her movie picks, I think.

I'll definitely go see Million Dollar Baby!

No worries, looked it up. It was Ma Cushla. Properly written in Gaelic that would be Mo Cuislá. And most commonly used in the phrase, Cuislá mo chroí, meaning pulse of my heart.

That's very sweet, so she became his surrogate daughter in the end..

Haven't seen the movie. Don't go to movie theaters, sticky floors and spoiled, rude, loud obnoxious self-centered brats.. .and that's just the "adults."

From what I gather here, she gets the stuffing beat out of her and faces a life of disability and Dirty Harry drops the hammer on her. Do I have this right?

Yeah, and he killed her. My main beef with "MDB" is that it had too many subplots: was it a movie about a man who struggled to find his faith, and in the end jeopardized his salvation? Or about a father who'd lost his daughter, only to gain a daughter, only to lose her as well? Or was it about two relative nobodies who together accomplished something that neither of them could have achieved without the other? Or was it simply a propaganda piece for euthanasia?

I have to admit it was a beautifully done movie, and touching and poignant in many ways, but the end ruined it for me.

Sorry Gunrunner...been absent for a few days. I also haven't seen the movie yet but what you say sounds correct. I did, however, see the lack of coverage from the real objectors to this movie, whom were disabled Americans. In fact, they held a protest march outside one of the award ceremonies.

I'll withold my own opinion until I see the movie...but that doesn't let Rich off the hook for his deliberate attempt to make this a Republican vs Democrat debate, as he smears the right-wing. This guy is such a pig.
