CHICAGO -- A Morgan Park High School teacher has been charged with public indecency after allegedly being caught in a compromising position with a 17-year-old member of the football team.
Police reportedly caught the pair on West Englewood Avenue earlier this week in a car that was reported as suspicious. When police arrived, they allegedly found the teacher and student half-naked, NBC5's Lisa Tutman reported.
English Teacher Suspended
Tutman reported that the female teacher, 27-year-old Mariama Buchanan, has been suspended and has been reassigned to administrative duties off-campus pending the outcome of an investigation. The student and his family are being offered counseling and support services. Buchanan and the student are due in misdemeanor court next month.
"She was one of my favorite teachers, to tell you the truth," said student Nathanial Carter. "Matter of fact, she was my favorite teacher. I still don't think she did it."
Rumors about a possible encounter between the student and the English teacher had been talked about among the student body. In a letter home to parents sent on Thursday, school officials briefly discussed the allegations, further explaining that the alleged incident was not connected to school activities in any way and was not on school grounds.
A Chicago Public Schools spokesman said there is no evidence at this point that any other students were involved, and that this appeared to be case involving only one student.
Meanwhile, students said they hoped that the incident would not reflect negatively on their school.
"It was very inappropriate what went on," said student Brittany Johnson. "But I think it shouldn't reflect the generalization about this school as a whole. I still think Morgan Park is a good school despite the actions of those individuals."

If it had been a male teacher boffing a 17-year-old cheerleader then he should have faced a harsh penalty. But since it's a woman and a 17-year-old male is practially an adult anyway, I say we nominate her Teacher of the Year. And she should also get a wonderful tribute "Biography" on A&E, as well.

Even if he was just turning 18, in my mind, the student-teacher relationship needs to be maintained.
If I wanted to have a fling with an enlisted person in my unit, rape isn't the issue...It's respecting a line that I agreed not to cross.
If my best friend sleeps with my daughter after she's turned 18, it's may not be rape, but it certainly is a betrayal.
Consenting adults be damned, my kids go to school to learn curriculum that is not related to the instructor's penis or vagina.

Rape is more true in some of the cases. But the recent rash of teacher-student sex is with female teachers. Can't call that rape. So many sex starved teachers, nymphomaniac ones too. One took up with the student after leaving her husband. How does he feel about his competition being a 14 year old kid?
We had the same "talk" among students at the school I teach at. She was never caught and is now a big wig at the department of education. I find it interesting that this teacher is not listed at rate my teachers.com http://us.ratemyteachers.com/SelectTeacher.php?sid=6742 I know of at least 20 teachers who have left my school in the last two years and are still listed. What gives?

It's not about the age. Teachers are "in loco parentis"--ie, in the moral and legal authority of the parents. That makes a teacher having sex with a student closer to incest.
Parents trust the teacher not to cross boundaries for very good reasons. It's not "cute", or "funny" or "sexy". And boys also often have problems with these boundary violations. Two teenagers having sex is complicated enough, but teacher and student ...a big legal and moral NO-NO!
