Paris (CNSNews.com) - Reaction here to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's key policy speech aimed at improving trans-Atlantic relations has been warm, although some in France remain unconvinced.
Radio and television news commentators were effusive about the charm of the new secretary of state during her stop in Paris, where she also held meetings with President Jacques Chirac and Foreign Minister Michel Barnier. The visit was intended to set the groundwork for a trip to Europe next week by President Bush.
The left-leaning newspaper Liberation headlined the visit a "smile" from Bush, calling her speech at a top political science university in Paris a "big game to seduce Paris."
The article, which wavered between cynicism and optimism, quoted her call for a new cooperation between Europe and the United States.
"It is time to turn away from the disagreements of the past. It is time to open a new chapter in our relationship, and a new chapter in our alliance," Rice told the audience of students and political leaders at the Institut d'Etudes Politique.
In an editorial, Liberation reminded readers that it was Rice who had dictated American policy designed to punish France for its firm opposition to the war in Iraq.
"We will judge the quality of the 'new chapter' promised by Mrs. Rice based on U.S. action in the Middle East and on other matters, from global warming to Iran or to China, where Europeans and Americans have different approaches," it said.
An editorial in Le Figaro , a more right-leaning daily newspaper, echoed the need to feed the new relationship through concrete cooperation, possibly in the Middle East, where Europe sees itself as having more influence with Arab nations.

And I will still not purchase any products made in France. My skepticism remains.
France hasn't yet begun to kiss enough American as--er, butt.
The only skirts they're used to seeing on foreign affairs ministers in France are worn by men.
Screw the Frogs!
I was surprised the other day,
I had purchased some McCormick's sea salt, comes in a grinder.
Upon looking at the label it states 'Made in France'. :(
Give a frog a woman and they just melt.

If they expect us to switch to their point of view, they are sadly mistaken. We still don't believe in apeasement or surrender. If they want to continue down the path of no return, that's fine. Enjoy your future in Hell. Crapweasels.
Look how nuts they went over Josaphine Baker.
"...Josaphine Baker."
Eatha Kitt also found a warm welcome. Is there a pattern developing here?
Well ..Condi could have kicked them in the cajones....but then that option wasnt available due to the lack there of in France.....a day without laffing at the french is like a day without sunshine!
Not unless the condom is double thick.
Eartha Kitt found a warm welcome everywhere. She had that quality.
In the Philippines, she is well-remembered for perhaps the definitive rendition of "Waray-waray" - a popular folksong.
Someone should remind them that in American public schools, the first thing every single student is taught in junior high is how to effectively dissect Frogs...
I've only purchased American hair coloring products since the boycott began. Giving up L'Oreal has been a hardship but I persist.
'...well-remembered for perhaps the definitive rendition of "Waray-waray" - a popular folksong.'
I've never heard of that one, but one of my favorite seasonal tunes is "Santa Baby." I know lots of people hate that song but its in-your-face cynicism makes me laugh every time. (Plus she was the best Cat Woman of the original three).
She used to come to Manila a lot, back in those days, and she always sang "Waray-waray". Maybe she only sang it in Manila.
Yes, she was the best Cat-woman.
A heroic sacrifice indeed. You are an American patriot.
