Mark Dayton Not Running For Re-election
Minneapolis Star Tribune (aka The Red Star) ^

Posted on 02/09/2005 9:59:41 AM PST by MplsSteve

Wow, if this is true Minnesota is gonna be a huge free for all in '06.

Everybody and their brother will run for this seat.

The DFL still has a large reservoir of talent even though the GOP has pulled to almost parity in recent elections.

Opinions anyone?

Republican Mark Kennedy should win fairly easily. Kennedy has been mounting a war chest to go after this seat for years. Here is a pic of Mark Kennedy meeting w/ Bush:

Collin Peterson is a good democrat, like a Zell. He's staunchly pro-life and a friend of the NRA, but he's soft on taxes.

Peterson, or even Oberstar, has no chance of winning this primary. You'll see Franken, Mondale, and McCollum fighting on the Left. You've also got a Gubernatorial race in 2006, which will split the field.

From 1979-1981, both Senators in MN were pubbies.

Kennedy has been building up a warchest for this seat since he first got into the House in 2002.

Washington state home of numerous indian casinos and RINO county auditors beholden to the Dems - land of "Kiev county" aka King county where victory for a liberal is always just a hand recount (and a few thousand dead/ nonresident voters) away - if you remember to disqualify the military absentee ballots in advance by not mailing them out in time!

Or in Oregon, where every election is an unmonitored mail-in ballot affair - thus allowing the party machine to change any result they don't like. Of course, we have a state ballot measure initiative petition process, so they need the state supreme court (and sometimes the 9th circus) to overturn the will of the voters on a technicality...

'I remember them. RINO Durenburger was a loser, a drunk who leaked intelligence secrets, violated Senate ethics, and had an extramarital affair with a staffer.'

Hey now! That drunken, cheating, loose lipped loser with a book deal and cheap rent on a condo was my T-ball coach!

I thought he was a prety good guy, actually. Went to a Fighting Saints game with him and his sons once, too. He deserved a better exi IMO.

Kennedy has been looking at a Senate race for several years, that's true.

I believe his likely opponent will be Hennepin County (Minneapolis and suburbs) Attorney Amy Klobuchar.

Her dad was a well-known columnist for the StarTribune for many years and she has very very good name ID in Minnesota's most populous county.

She's telegenic and actually quite personable for a lawyer. She will be easily able to raise money because she's a femal candidate.

For a Democrat, she's actually been pretty tough on crime and will run on that record.

I agree.

I was active on his '88 re-election campaign and knew a number of people on his congressional staff.

He was most definitely not an alcoholic and I have heard of those rumors of marital infidelity as well. I'm not sure they were even true.

As for the condo deal, that was not a good thing. But he paid the price for it. He was censured (or reprimanded) by the Senate and didn't run for re-election in '94.

Definitely a Democrat.

You can see it in his rulings and who he associates with outside of court.

Dayton is an extremely wealthy man whose father runs Dayton-Hudson stores, which includes Macys, Target, and other chains. Why should he stay around for anything that doesn't suit his royal highness?

"Kennedy should win fairly easily." Should, but won't. He may well win, but it won't be easy. We thought we might win Minnesota for W. last year, but we didn't.

It's certainly good to be rid of an SOB like Dayton.

The open seat in MN is going to be a free for all. I hope Kennedy and Gil don't "poke each other's eyes out" in the primary.

Colin Peterson may be the most electable among the RATS but his pro-life views and friendship with Rep. Katherine Harris will not endear him to the MoveOn.org wing of the RATS. He and Katherine the Great dated for a while. Plus during the 200 recount saga, Colin defended Ms. Harris. For these reasons, Colin will not be the RAT nominee.

MN is going to be ground zero for political activity. With an open Senate seat, plus a potential Presidential candidate (Tim Pawlenty) running for re-election, MN voters should gear up for endless political ads next year.

I agree.

If Mark Kennedy run for the Senate, we'll also have an open House seat.

The race in his district (the 6th) was a tough one in '04 and likely will be again.

Also, the state house and state senate are both up for re-election. The GOP narrowly controls the house and the DFL narrowly controls the senate.

I agree.

It would be just like the late 70's thru 1990 when we had two GOP senators, Boschwitz and Durenberger.
