Greeting Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Air Force General Richard Meyers. By tradition, the Joint Chiefs and attending members of the Supreme Court sit in the center front row. Also by tradition, they do not applaud policy issues, but only strictly non-partisan matters. The Joint Chiefs can applaud matters dealing with the military.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff sit in front of the President. To their left is Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. Sen. John Kerry sits stiffly toward the upper left edge of the photo. Other Dem senators fill the 2nd and third rows, and Dem House members are in the remaining rows. Charlie Rangel can be seen in the upper left corner of the photo. Joe Lieberman is on the aisle to the President's right. (If Ted Kennedy attended the event, I have not found him in any photo.)

John Manuel Martinez, and Janet and William Norwood, parents of a fallen Marine from Pflugerville, Texas. Bottom row from left are: New Mexico teacher Lorna Clark, Norbert Lara, Iraqi Women's Political Council leader Safia Taleb al-Suhail and Mrs. Bush.
The First Lady is applauded as she takes her seat before the President enters the chamber.

Newspapers in Baghdad show the 'V'-sign for victory with one of the fingers stained with ink. The headline reads "From Here we Start."

The First Lady applauds Iraqi voter Safia Taleb al-Suhail. Teacher Lorna Clark and Army Staff Sargent Norbert Lara are also in the frame.
The First Lady applauds with her special guest Homira Nassery, while guest Safia Taleb al-Souhail gives a victory sign.
The President looks toward the First Lady's box.

Safia Taleb al-Suhail shows her inked finger.
Republican members of Congress display their inked fingers in support of the Iraqi election. No Democrats joined in this show of solidarity with the Iraqi people.

Mr. and Mrs. Norwood are introduced. She fights back tears and leans on her husband's shoulder.
Mrs. Norwood wipes away tears.
An angle that shows the President's sister, Doro, and, next to her, Washington, DC mayor Anthony Williams.
Safia Taleb al-Suhail embraces Janet Norwood. Mr. Norwood shakes the hand of the Marine sargent escorting them for the event.
This angle shows the First Lady's facial expression as the two women embrace. She appears to be fighting back tears.

Still caught up in the emotion-charged closing portion of the speech, a solemn President Bush leaves the podium.

The President surrounded by members of Congress and of his Cabinet as he begins to leave the chamber.
Giving Condi a peck on the cheek as he leaves. Secretary of Defense Don Rumsfeld, and Secretary of the Treasury John Snow look on.
President Bush, leaving the chamber, greets members of Congress as Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) and Senator Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) look on.
President Bush makes his way out of the House Chamber after delivering his annual State of the Union speech. He is escorted at left by Senate Majority Leader Sen. Bill Frist.
This President enjoys "rock star" status with the young Capitol Hill pages. They watch the SOTU speech from the back-most part of the chamber and stand throughout. Here the pages reach out to shake his hand as the President exits the chamber.

Dana Reeve, widow of actor Christopher Reeve, attending President Bush's State of the Union address Wednesday. (This was a surprise to me. I guess liberal Hollywood types who want something funded by Congress have to learn to get alone with Republicans these days.)

Concluding this photo essay, we normally don't post photos of Dems on the Dose (figuring you can see those on many other threads). But I thought you all might richly enjoy this one -- and maybe do a little smirking along with the President and Vice President. My caption: "How can I
ever top that man."
Besides, what better place for an arse to be than bringing up the rear, even if it's the rear of a photo essay.
