When John Huston made "The Maltese Falcon," he didn't mean you should go out and murder people and steal priceless artifacts.

The movies Huston directed existed in a moral universe: the bad guys were either arrested or killed in the end. Does Clint's movie have a similiar exploration of consequences? (I haven't seen it so I don't know.)

He's just trying to solve the Social Security dilemma.

Sometimes a movie is just a movie.

That sounds like something a person with an AGENDA would say!!!!! What are you hiding????

Yup. Clint's okay.

I get a little cranky with FReepers who think a filmmaker can't explore an issue or a topic they might not agree with without being "branded." That's the kind of thing the Libs do with Mel Gibson, for one handy example.

Agree BUT I want to change "FReepers who think a filmmaker can't explore an issue or a topic they might not agree with" to "people" who think a filmmaker can't explore an issue or a topic they might not agree with."

There really is no way for many of us interactive internet board readers to know who is posting on internet boards.

Well and truly put, Proust. "Yes, Angel, I'm going to send you over," said Humphrey Bogart to Mary Astor, when she asked him to cover for her murder of his partner. She went to the big house - and probably the chair - - because Bogart's Sam Spade knew that was what had to happen. """Well, when one of your organization gets killed, it's, it's bad business to let the killer get away with it, bad all around, bad for every detective everywhere.""" ------ Maltese Falcon

There is no such thing as "assisted suicide". Maybe "consensual murder", but if another person is doing the killing, it isn't suicide, regardless of how much the Left wants to twist the language.

"Homophobia" isn't about phobia, "hate crimes" aren't crimes because hate is involved, "pro choice" isn't about choice, and "assisted suicide" is not suicide.

Well, er, Sam Spade wasn't entirely the most moral guy ever! :)

There was an "assisted suicide" in the "Sand Pebbles", but it still was a great flick!

If I want to kill myself, I'd just do it. It happens thousands of times a day. And 99.9% of them didn't need or ask for help.

at the time though Clint was regarded as maybe not conservative in the way you or I think of it but as the Republican compared to the opposition.........he doesn't like to talk about politics very much but is still thought of as to the right

You don't think art should be challenging or thoughtful?

The assisted suicide in question literally takes place at the very end. It would make no sense to give away the direct ending of a movie. No matter what it was.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Chris Reeves? Same predicament, so should he have yanked the respirator years ago?
The Nazis would have loved the film's ending. I saw a while back a Nazi propaganda drama extolling the heroine for getting her doc to give her lethal meds because she had MS. The German term translated to something like "Like Unworthy of Life." Showed scened of cretins and others, "unworthy of life."

The thing is though that Reeves didn't want to die. The character in this movie did. No one was pressuring her to. In fact the Eastwood character tries to talk her out of it. It's certainly not presented as something cheerful or easy.

If you haven't seen it yet, go see 'Coach Carter'. Based on a true story, and it's great.

It also has a very strong anti welfare message, so I'd say it balances out.

Exactly.

Some of these replies sound like what one would expect of the DU'er - snap judgments when not even having see the movie!

I lived in Carmel for some years - small town about 4000 - I had private dealings with Clint - don't start knocking him. He's one of the good guys - straight as an arrow conservative - has done a lot of good things not many will know about.

But he's a story teller - who tells a story...he doesn't use movies, like the libs, to send a message. Let's not turn on our own. Especially in Hollywood - there's too few on "our side" out there.
