Haven't seen his movie. Is Clinton Eastwood pushing assisted suicide?

I haven't seen "Million Dollar Baby," but I've heard liberals on radio say it's great - but they can't share the ending - - but it has something to do with politically "important" issues - - - then there was a hint about assisted suicide.

Now, if liberals love it (and the Oscar nominators like it) and it really does involve assisted suicide, then I would assume it's PRO-assisted suicide. AM I RIGHT? If so, that's a big disappointment - - -

man John......you and I run into each other alot...but that is the point......as opposed to some here, I do think for myself and don't read into any politics of the movie. I go purely for entertainment and I'm a big Clint Eastwood fan having met him twice in my life and growing up on his spaghetti westerns......I don't see it as political ideology do you????? Clint tends to lean right, not left

Damn straight, the government should ban this movie this very instant to prevent people from seeing it. That is the only way to protect us all.

I understand that the movie is receiving rave reviews in the Netherlands.

The greats don't need to inject ideology into their art, the artwork speaks for itself. It's just a cheap shot to get people to talk about you. It is running rampant nowadays because they have run out of ideas for really good movies, ones that don't offend people.

well I think you don't give "society" much credit. If you think they are that easily influenced than I don't know what to say......The Jews were beside themselves cause after the Passion, they thought there would be all this Jew hating rhetoric........and what happened .....nothing. In my opinion, and only mine and not putting you down at all, I think some social conservatives go overboard sometimes in seeing things that are not there. I'm a Christian but I'm also very pragmatic and just don't see evil in everything out there......that is all. No defamation to you or anyone, I'm strong enough to not let this change my way of thinking

I agree. I sometimes dream about tossing a hotdog down a dark hallway. Still haven't figured that one out.

Oh, by the way, we may differ here, but thanks for starting a great thread and interesting discussion!

I'm not going to go into the assisted suicide moral issue again. You know where I stand on that.

How boring and unimaginative...

I get a little cranky with FReepers who think a filmmaker can't explore an issue or a topic they might not agree with without being "branded." That's the kind of thing the Libs do with Mel Gibson, for one handy example.

I think we have to get out of the habit of thinking of certain celebs as "one of ours" as if they will never again get a role in something we would never want to watch. (BTW, Gibson produced the flop Paparazzi shortly after Passion hit the jackpot.)

IMHO, Jim Caviezel is in a corner -- having played Jesus Christ in The Passion..., he's not exactly on the lips of the Hollyweirdo honchos who begrudge Passion's overwhelming success, and it's going to alienate his newest fans if he ever plays a bad guy.

OK, I can see your point.

I mean if it is an assisted suicide, so what?

But why does he take so much trouble making the point that the main hero that does the deed is Catholic?

So to be a hero he has to kill someone....

I really didn't see the point of making sure that everyone knew that this character is Catholic, unless it was to make a political statement that the only true hero is one that disregards the Church and kills people.

That being said I believe in euthanasia.

And I nominate Clint Eastwood for the procedure.

Unless you are in a coma state you can always do yourself in. Supposedly it's a sin but I think it depends on the situation. I can't say I would be against someone who put it in writing that if they ever reached a certain stage in their life for the doctors to pull the plug. I think it's kind of amoral to keep someone alive by artificial means, especially if it's against the persons wishes.

you are way to sensitive about being Catholic....the last time I got upset at a movie like that was the "Exorcist"....and my goodness, that was about Catholics too.....goodness gracious

So is this the plot twist the critics are making such a point not to talk about that you are putting in the title? Can you say "spoiler?"

Yeah, I heard he is a conservative... maybe even a Republican. Don't recall where or when I heard it.. but just something I remember.

Many of his movies he makes out to be anti PC and anti gov bureaucracy.

I really didn't see the point of making sure that everyone knew that this character is Catholic, unless it was to make a political statement that the only true hero is one that disregards the Church and kills people.

It's that way in the original short story from the collection, Rope Burns. Eastwood would have been criticized for sparing the Catholics if he didn't include that portion.

OTOH -- the original story -- reprinted under the movie's title and which I read in line at Costco -- also has Clint's trainer character making a lot of what could be termed as "hate speech" about the bulky Russian female opponent who eventually sends Hilary Swank down for the count. Maybe one of those who saw Baby can tell us: Does Clint say "Bulldagger" anytime in his flick?

Yeah, I don't like bait and switch movies that portray the hero's as repentant Catholic murders when their salvation is killing someone.

Real sensitive.

I loved Exorcist BTW.
