MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews suggested last night that the high point of President Bush's State of the Union Address - the emotional hug between grateful Iraqi voter Safia Taleb al-Suhail and Janet Norwood, mother of a Marine who died liberating her country - was staged by the White House.
The cynical host apparently first voiced his skepticism during a commercial break. His comments were immediately seized upon by "Hardball" guest, MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan when the show returned.

I'll see that and raise you stones coveniently placed on the sandy beach at Normandy so William Clinton could spontaneously make them into a cross.

i MISSED THE BEGINNING OF THE SPEECH. WHEN AND WHY DID THE DEMS BOO?
NIKOS VLACHOS
I think they just told Ron Jr. that to make him feel better.
Yes, exactly my thought.
Of course they had a seating arrangment! But the women didn't know they would be there right beside each other. Therefore your contention it was "staged" is ludicrous. No one told them to reach toward each other for a hug. It caught everyone, including camera men, off guard. Sheesh.
Bush said, "If you hate terrorists and love democracy, cheer!"
They booed.
Same reason they tied a porkchop around his neck as a toddler.....so at least the dog would play with him.
Here's the title of the thread, FYI.
Chris Matthews needs to be slapped across his fat, ugly face. He is a despicable excuse for a human, and certainly is no man. What a repugnant, fat-assed punk he is, I truly despise him.
No I'm much better than Matthews, I understand that the entire SOTU is a staged event and won't hypocritically complain about one part of the staged event. The prior planning that went into putting those two people together in the hopes of a good TV moment doesn't bother me anymore than the prior planning that went into the selection of W's tie.
You got to be kidding....how then did the admin know that maybe the Marine mom might slug or turn away from the Iraqi woman instead of hug her....
Cite source and prove, Matthews.
Otherwise, your assertion is just that.
Regards, Ivan
Sounds like Chrissy is making stuff up again.
Why don't we return the favor and come up with a story on Chris Matthews. Maybe something about him and Ronny getting together for some hot extracurricular activities and start posting it all over the net.
After all, I have no facts on such but I feel it to be true. Didn't the MSM say we bloggers should use the same standards as them?
They booed when W said the SS was going bankrupt at some point in the future and suggested a crisis existed.
That's ridiculous. The emotion was genuine. Those people from Pflugerville would never have stooped to such a level - that was a genuine moment between both those women. Chris Matthews is one sad little man.
I'm quite aware of the title of the thread, I'm also quite aware that there's varying levels of staging an event, and anybody who thinks it was just some accident that those two people were in the same area of the audience and introduced is just being silly. I'm not saying they were given a countdown to hug time, which might be what Chrissy is trying to imply, but I understand TV and politics well enough to know that somebody got an attaboy when the hug happened. I'd say it was a little less staged than most of the fights on Springer, but still staged.
