Matthews: White House Staged Slain Marine Mom's Hug

MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews suggested last night that the high point of President Bush's State of the Union Address - the emotional hug between grateful Iraqi voter Safia Taleb al-Suhail and Janet Norwood, mother of a Marine who died liberating her country - was staged by the White House.

The cynical host apparently first voiced his skepticism during a commercial break. His comments were immediately seized upon by "Hardball" guest, MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan when the show returned.

But the women didn't know they would be there right beside each other. Therefore your contention it was "staged" is ludicrous. No one told them to reach toward each other for a hug

That's your definition of not staged? If they were deliberately seated next to each other by the Bush admin, in order to get that hug, but the women didn't know about it, isn't that still staged?

When Jerry Springer puts a radical black nationalist next to a klansmen on his show, that's staged. He's deliberately making trouble by putting two persons together who will react to one another. Even if the people in question don't know what's going to happen.

To be fair, it was Buchanan that actually brought it up after hearing Matthews talking about it off-air

but there were decisions made and reactions hoped for, that makes it staged.

Well, that's a declarative statement if there ever was one.

What's your PROOF of that?

Laura Ingraham just tore Chrissy a new one, both with quotes and analysis.

I seriously doubt that Baby Huey Matthews is familiar with the terms.

The Iraqi woman was there to represent the Iraqi people who just voted.

The mother and father of the fallen Marine were there to represent all of our fallen troops.

There was no design that some interaction would take place between the mother and the Iraqi voter. But it did and it put the lie to everything the dem/media have been saying, hence spin city.

Watching Chrissy at any time is not good for your general well-being.

They were in the First Lady's box, which I don't think is a large area.

Why wouldn't they be sitting near each other?

Those galleries are not that big, and they were both guests of Mrs. Bush. Of course they were sitting near each other.

Watch the video, notice how one second Clinton and smiling and carrying on, until he spots a camera, then he suddenly becomes very sad and wipes away a tear. This was when he was walking away at the end of Ron Brown's funeral.

Nikos,

The Dems actually booed, which has never been done at a State of the Union Speech before, when President Bush said that Social Security would be bankrupt in 2042. They continue to claim no crisis, at least now, its just a mere nuisance.
