Taking Border Patrol Into Their Own Hands

Criticizing Bush's handling of migration, hundreds volunteer to stand watch in Arizona.

DENVER — Fed up with illegal immigration and eager to send a message to federal lawmakers, hundreds of volunteers from across the nation will spend the month of April patrolling the Arizona-Mexico border, helping to apprehend migrants coming into the U.S.

"This is a direct challenge to President Bush," said Chris Simcox, an organizer of what's being called the Minuteman Project. "You have continued to ignore this problem. Our state officials, senators and congressmen will do nothing. So this is a last-ditch effort to roll up our sleeves and do it ourselves."

Arizona is the nation's busiest gateway for illegal immigrants, with about 580,000 arrests last year — more than in California, Texas and New Mexico combined. Most of the activity occurs in the southeast part of the state near Tucson. Last year, Arizona received $10 million in federal aid and hundreds of additional border and customs agents. Many immigrants now choose to go through New Mexico, but traffic in Arizona remains high.

Simcox — the founder of Civil Homeland Defense, which runs its own border patrols — said 416 people from 41 states had volunteered to take up positions between the Arizona towns of Naco and Douglas and around Coronado National Forest. A rally is planned for April 1, when organizers expect 2,000 people to park their cars along the border, forming a gantlet to repel illegals.

"We have a no-contact policy. We are acting only as eyes and ears," said Simcox, who also runs the Tombstone Tumbleweed, a weekly newspaper in Tumbleweed, Ariz. "We work within the law. We spot and find illegal immigrants and report them to the Border Patrol."

Illegal immigration is out of control. It is not racist to not want illegal aliens here. It is irresponsible of our government not to enforce laws.

BIG BUMP for the citizens who are making a personal effort to do the job that Mr. Bush refuses to do.

Let me take a wild guess, he's a Democrat. "I voted for illegal immigration before I voted against illegal immigration."

I wonder how it could be since 'Mexican' is a nationality not a race.

State and local law enforcement officers can enforce immigration laws and the CBP has a program to train them. If the citizens in Cochise County or any other county in America wanted to they could instruct their law enforcement officers to bust illegals and the employers of illegals.

Has Simcox's newspaper ever run an editorial calling for the local police to bust people who employ illegals in his county? Or would that drive down subscriptions?

This is a very great point. If the Federal goverment would throw the book at any company that hires illegals, this crap would stop overnight. Without employers, there would be no pull for the illegals to risk their lives coming up here. I actually emailed the President last year (which probably got deleted immediately) castigating him for letting Rove triangulate the Hispansics at the expense of national security. In that email I suggested a simple solution, fine the first illegal immigrant employee at $50,000 and continue doubling it for each new infraction. If a company had 10 illegals that would be a fine of about $50 million dollars. I guarantee that multiple small to middle companies would go out of business overnight, and giant companies would have gnashing of teeth over the fines. All of these fines could then be handed over to the border patrol to strengthen our borders.

This is not rocket science to fix this problem; unfortunately, the political lust for the hispanic vote is going to get LA or Las Vegas dirty nuked by a terrorist coming up through the pipeline. I guess when that happens they might actually do something about this mess.

Local police can bust employers also. But most of the people who post on immigration threads don't blame their local police or mayors for any of the problems. They just want an excuse to attack Bush.

Most are old Buchanan supporters who still haven't gotten over him winning the nomination in 2000.

Yeah, how 'bout that? Stupid on top of brain dead. These days, that drag dog "racists" tag is so thread worn they toss it out like a ... like a ... like what? We have the illegal alien parade trying to glom on to 1860's era America. I suggest we quiz them on it.
