The next version of the popular open-source Firefox will likely show up in June of 2005, not March as earlier expected, the browser's lead engineer wrote this weekend in his blog.
"In a move that I would hope should surprise exactly nobody, we're pushing back 1.1 by a little bit because of the realities of the work remaining to be done," wrote Ben Goodger.
The updated road map for Firefox 1.1 noted that beta should ship in early April, with a final edition to follow in June. The next major revision, dubbed 2.0, is still on track for release sometime during 2005, according to the road map.
Goodger, who last week announced that he had been hired by Google -- but will continue working on Firefox at least part time -- denied that the change in employers caused the delay.
"The slippage from March is not due to my move to Google, it is due to us needing to ensure the 1.1 release is of identical quality and scope as the 1.0 release," he wrote. "That means a period of testing, the localization system needs to be brought back online, etc. These things are done by more people than just myself, so quit with the wacky speculation."
Minor news ping.
I was disappointed when I read about this the other day...
What is the new capability you were needing or at least looking for?
It runs great for me!
Firefox 1.0 works a lot better for me than any release of Internet Explorer ever did.
If I could safely remove IE from my machine, it would have been gone long, long ago.
If the Firefox team wants to take their time and do things right, I'm not about to complain about that.
I've been running it since .6, way back when, now I'm on 1.0
Not very fond of the way they linked Google in, I wish I could detach it. Since it's free, you can expect they will have a built in spybot type thing reporting to Google.
So I'll probably stay on 1.0
It seems to do things pretty transparently.
They need to put 'Composer' (html editor) in it. I'll be damned if I'm gonna spend money to get an html code generator. Other than that glaring weakness, it's terrific.
I've tried to fumigate IE on my system and gave up after my first pass at deleting registry keys. It's so deep in there forget it.
Thank you, I'll check it out.
With with all the third party extensions available, I can't imagine where they want to go with a new version. I hope they don't screw it up - it works so well now.
The 1.1 version will have the scrolling position issue corrected. That is, when you're reading a thread and hit refresh, the screen should remain at the same post you were at, instead of shifting it like it does now.
1.0 always locks up when using excite mail...
But I gather Nvu is not available, accg to the FAQ page?
That said; I still prefer Firefox to IE and see no reason to dump it.
Does this happen during file downloads? The "Download Manager Tweak" fixed the problem I had with freezups when invoking a download.
Haven't had it happen during downloads of files, but it happened yesterday when accessing a Quicktime Movie (That hillarious VW Polo "commercfial"). I'm not sure if it's a specific Firefox issue or if it is just something that McAfee has going on; it only occurs between the two of them(McAfee sucks up processor usage during some Firefox processes) and it doesn't seem to be a constant thing. I'm almost tempted to change AV apps to see if it happens with Norton too. (Another bennie of working DOD is that we get free access to the AV stuff so our home computers are safe to use for official business too).
I wonder what's different between our machines?
Go to the link heprovide in Post #9. The download link is right on that page.
Hm. Thanks; yet their own FAQ page speaks of it exclusively in the future tense. Odd, that.
