Dear JPANet Member,
This week the U.S. Senate will debate and vote on the nomination of Judge Alberto R. Gonzales for the office of U.S. Attorney General. Judge Gonzales has faced stiff questioning from both Republican and Democratic members of Congress on his troubling record regarding human rights, detention, torture, the death penalty and other civil rights issues. He has failed to release important documents related to the administration's policy on torture, detention, and interrrogation that paved the way for the horrific abuses that occurred in Abu Ghraib prison and Guantanamo.
As people of faith, we have strong reason to be concerned about this nomination. We have a profound commitment to affirming the dignity and worth of all people, all of whom are children of God. If our highest law enforcement official is known to have sanctioned torture and evaded fundamental human rights law, how can the United States have any credibility as we oppose repression in other nations? Such policies are antithetical to our basic moral values.
The U.S. Attorney General is responsible for enforcing federal law on behalf of all persons under the Constitution. Nothing less than a full and careful review of Judge Gonzales' record is required. Given that significant questions remain unanswered, urge your senators to oppose the confirmation of Judge Alberto Gonzales for U.S. Attorney General.
I may not be for much longer.
What the heck ever happened to churches spending time and our contributions on teaching Christian-Judeo values instead of left-slanted political crap.
First they suggest a "careful review" of the judge's nomination BUT first they ask you to tell your Senator to oppose him.
Caramba!
I asked the authors of this crap to cite me ONE PROVABLE EXAMPLE OF JUDGE GONZALES SANCTIONING TORTURE!
Are you aware of your church's position on "Live Birth Abortions"?
Headline: United Church of Christ sanctions heresy
And they know something about torture. Just sit through one of their sermons.
Can't resist suggesting the UCC sanctions (eternal) torture by its mistaken theology--but before declaring it, I'd want to investigate such a claim more carefully than just relying on my memory.
What does the U.S. Attorney General office have anything to do with the war? I thought this was a military matter handled by the President and the Congress. What does the questions of torture of prisoners have to do with him. He has the right to his own privacy and if I were in his shoes, I would return the question to those that ask and demand to know why the question in the first place.
