GOOD SENSE ON HARDBALL (SpitterMatthews slap down)
NRO corner ^ | Lowry

Posted on 01/28/2005 5:55:37 PM PST by hipaatwo

An LATimes reporter named Tony Perry was on “Hardball” last night, and made a lot of sense. Check out this exchange when Chris Matthews was asking a somewhat appalling question:

MATTHEWS: Suppose the minority Sunnis, who ran the government with Saddam Hussein when he was in power, supposed they decide as a community, 90 percent of them decide not to vote. Can we continue to call them insurgents or are they not secessionists, people who say we`re not part of this new government and therefore you have to ask the moral authority question. Can American service people fire on them if they simply say we`re not part of this new government? Do we have the right to tell them that they can`t do that...

Let me start with you, Tony, in country. What happens if the Sunnis say, we`re not playing ball, we`re not joining in this election? Could they become then a secessionist movement? What would happen?

PERRY: No, I don`t think so.

I think you have to realize that the Marines -- I`m with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment -- they`re not firing on people because of some philosophic difference. They`re firing on people they have to fire on to protect their own lives, people who have been using roadside bombs and suicide cars and snipers.

And I think -- I spoke to a Marine, a young Marine captain. He made a very good point. He said, this is not Vietnam. The insurgency here has no philosophy to speak of. This isn`t a philosophy like the Viet Cong that had communism, that had a national leader, Ho Chi Minh, that they adored. The insurgents basically have no philosophy, except no government, no control, no self-determination.

So it`s hard to think of them as some sort of legitimate party in that regard. They`re essentially -- in Ramadi, certainly, you could liken them to the Mafioso, who would really like to control, if not the whole city, certain neighborhoods and continue doing so.

Remember, this is a city that not even Saddam Hussein could control. They took over the government center from the Saddam Hussein government while he was in power. This is a very, very tough city as part of a tough province, the Al Anbar Province. There`s no philosophy here. There`s violence.

I saw that show and I have been surprised that I haven't heard much about it---

Chris usually will spend a lot of his time to try to find on more way to slam Bush, but I have to hand it to him, this one came out of left field!!!

I guess he doesn't remember what happened in American when the South tried to secede!

I have to laugh when I see Matthews all concerned about the Sunnis. A great point was made on a thread here yesterday: Would anyone give a damn if the (white) Afrikaners sat out the election in South Africa? No--in fact if someone had they'd have been called racists. Yet we're all so concerned with the Sunnis, who should feel lucky they're not all strung up by vengeance-minded countrymen.

How did the Spidiot respond to the dose of common sense? Just ignore it, like he usually does?

Major Garret of Foxnews said it in nearly the identical way. They, on Special Report did a comparison of Iraq and Viet Nam.(No comparison) Matthews is a mouthpiece for not only the DNC, but particularly Ted Kennedy. Not too biased in his reporting or commentary. sarcasm

I seldom see such logic in Tony Perry's stories for the Los Angeles Times. One must conclude that it is his editors and publisher who, by defining the story they want him to write, are the authors of the hand wringing hysteria that makes this newspaper the "French Times."

On same show Chris told Robert Redford that he (Redford) is to the "right of me" (Matthews) on Iraq. Essentially Redford had just said that he thought taking out Saddam a good thing, but of course would not have done it the way it was done.

A week or so after the election...C-span aired a panel of Dems doing a post-mortem..the usual "future of the Dem party" stuff..One of the panelists was Brad Carson, (who lost the OK senate race to Tom Coburn)..He was fairly pessamistic on future Dem prospects, and he uttered what may well be the most prophetic lineI've ever heard..(especially so considering the rants of Kennedy, Mattews, et al, these last few weeks.. )Coburn said that the Dem party may be doomed to failure in national elections until the last Vietnam era Democrat dies..

I have heard the same from a token conservative editor at a liberal newspaper.

And I have come to agree with him.

Remember this. The terrorists doing the killing in Iraq are trying to prevent people from freely selecting any leader. Before they can be considered with any seriousness they have to offer some sort of political alternative vision....

Kinda sounds like Democrats here huh? Kinda like terrorists without balls.

when he was at Pendalton it was like he was lost in outer space......his questions were inane and non reflective. He has no idea about the military, their function, capability etc. He is pandering to look good but it is so transparent that he comes off as an ignorant idiot

I am noticing that with reporters. They go to Iraq and see the truth is much different than what is being "reported" here in the States.
