It's not just that GHD is one the best movies ever made, it's that Bill M. is one of the best comic actors of this generation. That said, I've been told that, in the new Wes Anderson film, Bill is apperantly just as brilliant as he was when he played Peter Vinkman (he's best role). And, if anyone doesn't know who Pete Vinkman is, well, then you don't know Bill M. as well as you should.
I don't know why but every time I change the channel and see Groundhog Day on I stop and watch it. It is funny and in the end makes you feel good I guess.

A very good movie, but a heck of a long time to wait for a movie review. Its been out for a while now.
Considering that most movies are total dreck, what makes a good movie a "good movie"? Spectacular car chases? Outrageous FX? Serious gun play? Clever dialog? Enrapturing musical scrores? Over the holidays, that was one of the topics that came up - best movie, and why. I kept drawing a blank, one movie had great this, but lousy that, another had lots of good things but the plot was lame. Then last night while perusing through the massive Hick movie repository, I spied the "GroundHog Day" and smiled as I pulled it down and played it again because I collected it because at the time I considered it my favorite movie of all time. Nothing has ever unseated it from that position. Why? Couldn't tell you - it is the only movie that I will play over and over - most others just collect dust.
Oh, and there is the gratuitous car chase.
Noticing that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was nominated as 'Best TV Program' by some, may I add that IMHO, the best television character ever portrayed is the Garret Macy character on Crossing Jordan...
Groundhog Day is one of my all-time favorites! I will stop and watch it to the end whenever I see it when I'm channel surfing. This past Christmas my son gave me my own DVD so I can view it whenever I want, and not have to find it accidently.
One more thing Jonah, Hollywood makes things they want to make, not the things we want to see, or at least in the last 40 years. You want to see classic Americanna rent "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", that will rock your conservative world.

It never explains why the character would want to bed her either. Andie McDowell is not a first (or fourth!) choice anytime... :)
Others in this thread have analyzed the movie far better than I, and I agree with most. It's one of the few that are on my 'permanent watch' list. One I am so comfortable with I can go to sleep with it on, or have is playing as 'background' able to ignore or watch as I choose.

It has a real sweetness, heart, and poignancy to it. And pretty much anything with Bill Murray is brilliant. Would I say it's the best film of the last decade? I think it could be one of them, but considering what came out in the 90s, a decade that produced maybe 4 or 5 watchable films, that wouldn't be hard.
My personal favorite of his is Quick Change. "YOU DON'T KNOW RED FROM HELL!!!"

One of my favorite movies, along with Local Hero, I love stories of transformation. Kinda reminds me of my transformation to being a conservative and a card-carrying Republican!
Did you see the movie "THE HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG." Saw it last night and it's still haunting me. How Ben Kingsley did not get the Academy Award is beyond me. I've never seen a movie where you go back and forth from liking and disliking characters. It was so real it hurt. Depressing, yes. Brilliant, ABSOLUTELY.
The concept of being trapped in a repeat loop worked well in probably the best Stargate SG-1 episode too.
