Victor Davis Hanson: Illegal immigration is a moral issue
Jewish World Review ^ | 1-20-05 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 01/20/2005 5:48:45 AM PST by SJackson

As President Bush's guest worker proposals slog through Congress, new reports suggest that there may be not 8 million, but almost 20 million illegal aliens in the United States, a population larger than most entire states. $400 billion in taxes — almost the current annual budget deficit — are not collected due to a growing underground cash economy.

Mexico brazenly issued a survival guide for its intrepid citizens on how to cross illegally into the United States. A 2,000 mile border is porous at a time when stealthy terrorists count on such laxity to enter the United States.

The hallowed assimilationist formula has too few overt defenders these days — even though measured, legal immigration, English emersion, multiracialism instead of multiculturalism, and integration have ensured that past legal immigrants from Mexico are among America's finest citizens.

The laissez-faire right still lectures on open borders as if it were a matter of robust lawful immigration — emphasizing global competitiveness that accrues from cheap labor. The minimum wage, not illegality, supposedly is its only problem: if only the self-correcting market could be set free to adjudicate wages, $2 an hour might not tempt any more from rural Mexico.

The therapeutic left will not even talk of "illegal immigration" — taboo nomenclature that supposedly denotes racism. "Undocumented workers" is the politically correct terminology, even though not all aliens are working or simply misplaced their certification.

Davis must have been inspired to write this article from an appearance on Dobbs the other night when an OBL started his racist BS.

More moralizing purple prose from VDH. This guy is the conservative version of Woodrow Wilson.

There are too darn many mexicans in California, it's getting to be like a 3rd world country, in some areas.

Dubya has a businessman's mind. If Mexico where sealed off, there would be a revolution/civil war within a year. We would then see EVERYBODY in Mexico head north. Our refugee laws would entitle 99% of them to stay. The PC movement and the race card crowd would ensure that 99% of them would stay as the "services" these people would require are provided by unionized government workers.
It sounds to me that people with greater access to facts and probable outcomes are choosing a lesser of evils. I still oppose any Amnesty to these illegals.

Mexico is now owns Calimexico. There is no reason for us to deal with them on a financial level. Therefore Arnold can go to the capital of Mexico for assistance. I do not want my Federal Tax Dollar going to bail Calimexico out.

Sadly I have to agree. I'm fully aware of the vast corruption that is the Third World Lifestyle, and don't want it for my grandkids.
The first politician that is willing to bite the bullet and fully fund border security will have access to my checkbook and vote.
The one thing the OBL won't talk about is how many people here ILLEGALLY from the Middle East and will benefit from the AMNESTY.

Don't make yourself look stupid! When you start telluing other people what they should do, make sure you know what you are talking about!

My requirement was to be an American citizen....neighbors 1st!

I will never aid an illegal immigrant except top give hime a ride straight to the ICE Office or the Border Patrol station.

If we accept immigrants just because their country is poor and/or has a corrupt government, then we are enabling the existence of corruption and poverty.

Lets say the United States for some reason, would not accept immigrants at all. Wouldn't these same people be forced to FIGHT for their freedoms and wealth, the same way that our Forefathers did?

I'm really sorry that THEIR forefathers did not do for them what was done for us - we in the USA were born into what others provided. SO What? I'm supposed to pity other countries because mine is Rich? NO!

Immigrants should not immigrate and become sponges to what Our Forefathers gave us, they should stand as one in their own countries and provide freedom for their children.

Immigrants from countries like Mexico are SELFISH and LAZY.

I dont mean all immigrants. My rant was only about the mostly illegals who steal from our health, education, welfare systems.

20 million illegals in the US? How could we ever deport 20 million illegals?

It's funny how our government finds it so impossible to send 20 million illegals back to their homeland --- but their own government didn't have a problem sending them here.
