I wasn't suggesting a switch of topic to Barry Goldwater by quoting him any more than I would be interested in discussing Lord Acton if I quoted him.
One quotes a wise statement, in a case such as this, to demonstrate the shallowness of the one to which it stands opposed.

It's a "wise statement" on it's surface. But taken to its extreme, it gives carte blanche. So, I disagree.
Maybe Mr. Goldwater should have said: defending liberty is not extremist, it's American.
I'd go along with that.
