Accused Deserter on Navy 'Most Wanted' List

WEST JORDAN, Utah — A Marine who was declared a deserter days before military court proceedings stemming from an earlier disappearance from Iraq has been placed on a list of "most wanted" fugitives.

A mug shot of Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun appeared this week on a Navy criminal justice Web site, which claims the missing corporal now uses the alias "Jafar." His placement on the Navy list puts him among a select group of fugitives, some of whom are being hunted on allegations of terrorism, murder, conspiracy to commit murder, indecent assault and rape.

I don't know why he ever turned himself in in the first place, back in Lebanon. If he deserted, why didn't he just STAY deserted?

This guy's CO should explain why he sent this guy on leave in the first place. Hassoun should have been restricted to base until his trial. He could have still slipped away, but at least he wouldn't have had a 2-week head start.

My guess that there is some PC thinking on one side of the equation that gave him some rights he didn't deserve, and some first class mopery on his part for even coming back. Betcha he's dogmeat in three months.
