Yankee or Dixie? Take the Quiz
Yankee or Dixie ^

Posted on 01/14/2005 11:10:39 AM PST by Hillary's Lovely Legs

Yankee or Dixie?
Check on your dialect and see if you might have crossed over to the "other side"! Simply click on the correct answer. As you go, the quiz will automatically interpret each answer to show you what your answer implies about you. When you are done, press Compute My Score. Your score will be calculated as a percentage: 0% is pure Yankee and 100% is pure Dixie.

  • Do not change your answer during the test as it will ruin the score. You may do this after scoring is calculated to see the other answers.
  • If you make a mistake, hit Clear below to restart the test!
  • I regret that I do not have time to entertain discussions about this test or negotiate changes. It is provided strictly as-is and for entertainment purposes only.
  • Be aware that television entertainment has a lot of northern dialect in it. This will have more of an influence on you than you expect.
  • This test is based on results from the Harvard Computer Society Dialect Survey of 30788 respondents.

"60% (Dixie). A definitive Southern score!"

I grew up in Houston, Texas. I've been in California for the last 13 years. As far as I know, those that hear me speak can detect no particular (or strong) accent or dialect.

It did take me a couple of years of being in California to stop saying "fixin'", as in "I'm fixin' to go to the store". And I called "soda" of any brand a "Coke" for several years -- but now I called it a "soda".

Effie and Clyde were my mother's aunt and uncle, in Marks, MS. Speaking of New Orleans, my daughter's a freshman at Loyola - my wife and I are driving down to visit this weekend. What a wonderful place to visit!

Me too. 66% Definitive Dixie and I'm from Illinoistan. Go figure.

Although now that I think about it, my kid does from time to time tell me that I sound like a ridge-runner.

Hahahaha. I know, I was just teasing. I was surprised by the results since I have lived in Michigan my entire life.

I didn't know that outside New England no one knew what a grinder was. I knew that a sub, hogie, hero are all pretty much the same thing. In WA state when I asked where a good grinder shop was, most people had no clue what I meant.

We used to go on "Packie Runs" before the package store (liquor store) closed at 8pm. When I saw Tequila sold in a grocery store in New Mexico (after 8, on a Sunday) I was shocked! CT is kinda weird that way--no alcohol sales after 8pm or on Sundays/Holidays.

I'm bummed!! I scored 46% barely into to Yankee range & I was born and raised in New York!! Then again, that was the first 19 years of my life, I have spent the last 20 in the military...which could explain the score.... I NEED TO GO HOME!
