I don't think there is a good replacement for physical punishment.
There is something psychologically satisfying to the child about getting his punishment and then no longer having the guilt on his conscience. It also can be immediate which increases the punishment connection with the misdeed.
BTW I think switching is much better than using a board which might actually injure a child.
