When I was teaching in Turkey five years ago the "suitcase trade" was going strong. Russians would fly to Istanbul with a suitcase full of manufactured goods like hand tools, sell these, and return with suitcases full of fabrics made in Turkey. They made money on both ends of the trip.

I used to see lots of Russian-made small items at a flea market near the University. Not only tools but things like razor blades (I never tried them).

Evidently Russian-Turkish trade has grown significantly since then.

Commerce between countries is a good thing.
