HONOLULU (AP) - A nuclear submarine ran aground about 350 miles south of Guam, injuring several sailors, one of them critically, the Navy said.
There were no reports of damage to the USS San Francisco's reactor plant, which was operating normally, the Navy said.
Jon Yoshishige, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet based at Pearl Harbor, said the Friday afternoon incident is under investigation and the 360-foot submarine was headed back to its home port in Guam.
Details on the sailors' injuries were not immediately available. The sub has a crew of 137, officials said.
Military and Coast Guard aircraft from Guam were en route to monitor the submarine and assist if needed, the Navy said.
Guam is a U.S. territory about 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.

I heard stories of the Chiefs in the Goatlocker donning flash hoods and watching Monte Python and the Holy Grail, repeating every line by heart. They are a great group!!
put me on
"You run aground, you're fired.
Period.
I saw it happen often in Vietnam with LST's."
I am not a Navy man either, but I read about them last night. Indpendent of the issue of the submarine, why would a skipper get fired for grounding an LST (Landing Ship, Tank), much less often? I thought they were designed to be grounded, and beach grounding was one of the purposes for which they were used.
Even if a skipper unitentionally touched bottom with one, if he got off unaided and without damage (which should not be that difficult normally) would that lead to anything? Knowing the friends that I had in the Navy during Vietnam, I would have thought that a "creative" explanation for the incident would have been developed. Seems to me that it would have had to have been particularly egregious with significant damage to the ship.
Or is the Vietnam LST not a landing ship?
I dare not repeat some of the things I saw in the goat locker. Just...ick.
Wouldn't that be obvious, quickly.
an airedale
You're in.
CLEARLY!
[not acting]
However, it tends to be an aspect of Navy culture and camaraderie to some degree. Being an A'' hole' earns points for macho, if I recall accurately at all.
Now the difference between noisey blustery A'holery and authentic A holes . . . probably depends a lot on context and upbringing.
At the Chiefs club in Groton one time, my Husband and some friends were talking....I asked them what "tea-bagging" was....I never asked him questions about the lingo in front of others again. Lesson learned.
Yep, especially on a boat with only two compartments.
uhhhhhh excuse my ignorance . . . but
aren't LST's DESIGNED to run aground?
When is it kosher and when is it not kosher?
"The ship has just finished two extended tours. They were on their way to Australia for some r and r. Then the ship is scheduled for a major refitting. This lack of information sucks.
You might think so, but there's the battery compartment, sanitaries, and a sonar sphere where damage wouldn't be immediately obvious.
Well, actually, in some cases you can unload a ship a get a little "up" option.....
Not a Navy man, but I have played one at the lake when everyone else was drunk....
You are right on the mark!
I've been aboard a boat (and on a skimmer) where something unforseen happened. In the case of the boat, we struck a growler with our attack scope coming to PD. Bent the scope into a pretzel, and dented the sail pretty nicely. the ping jockeys never had any idea it was there---it was that small and made no noise that would give itself away.
Board of Inquiry was held and they said that it (not the exact words, of course) one of those things.
Skipper stayed, as did the OOD.
If you get anymore word on that boat can you guys ping me?
add me to the list, please
That's not true. The primary reason for amphib ships being
aground is not being able to off-load by the tide table.
Happened to us while offloading in Beaufort, South Car.
Our equip broke down, caused backup in offload, tide went
out left LST high and dry.
Yeah, he's a fag.
[Lurking airedale, laughing]
