Developers hoping to turn the homey Eastern Sierra town into an upscale ski resort said Wednesday that construction of the area's first luxury hotel would begin with the spring snowmelt.
Intrawest Corp., a Canadian developer that has spent the last 15 years working to remake Mammoth, said it would erect a 230-room, $140-million Westin hotel. It is scheduled to open in the spring of 2007.
Dubbed the Westin Monache, the hotel would be the largest in town and the first to bear the nameplate of an upscale hostelry. It is the centerpiece of Intrawest's planned $1-billion makeover of Mammoth.
"The arrival of the first international hotel brand is a very significant step for Mammoth to be recognized as a world-class destination," said Peter Cowley, Intrawest's vice president of lodging development.

well then. Guess I know where I stand.
A luxery hotel in a volcanic caldera... now there's a good idea.
p.s. what a crying, sobbing shame.
Am I giving away TMI?
You can bet that ELF will target it. They need to have cameras installed for 24 hour viewing.
Yep, you won't see me plunking down cash to buy one of these condos. They don't want my kind, apparently, anyway. I find this really aggravating. Looks like they're interested in trying to become another Aspen, attracting the kind of folks who have their own planes.
They haven't targeted the big village built last year, so far. That I heard about, anyway.
We're talking about a building of luxury individually-owned condos, operated by the same company as is the Village, with the name Westin slapped on it.
Damn. I remember when Mammoth was where the true skiers went. The Snow Bunny types went to Tahoe.
Problems; Hard to get to, almost constants earthquakes and nothing to do in the Summer.
That was my first thought. My second was may all who stay there be liberal.
Skinny dipping in Hot Creek?
Last time I went there the locals shot at us.
Mono and Alpine (once the object of a gay take over attempt) are the only blue counties in the Sierras
Curious, what are the lava chunks you see up 395 in the Alabama Hills area? I can't imagine they're from Mammoth; they're so far south. Last I read, Mammoth is still 'active.' It's not actively spewing, but it's a dormant volcano that's not incapable of spewing. It's sleeping, but not dead.
Maybe it's Devil's Postpile I'm thinking of...
Well, after the skin peel, face lift & tummy tuck, you'd have plenty left over. How about your own private jet?
Speaking as someone who puts up with the desert, I'd love to live there in the summer. At least they have lots of minerally, pure, tasty, cold water. At their altitude, water boils in like 2 minutes!
(looks like they're trying to improve the regional airport. For private jets, anyway.)
