By TOM KERTSCHER tkertscher@journalsentinel.com Posted: Jan. 4, 2005 Racine - A 22-year-old woman who coached a private volleyball club and briefly coached at a Racine County high school has been charged with having sex with one of her 16-year-old players.

Jennifer L. Bradley of the 6000 block of Leeward Lane in Caledonia was charged with one felony - sexual assault of a student by an instructional staff member, which carries a prison term of up to six years - and five misdemeanors. She made her initial appearance Tuesday in Racine County Circuit Court.

According to a criminal complaint:

Bradley and the boy had a sexual relationship between June 12 and Sept. 4 while she coached a private club that he played for called Next Level Volleyball.

On Aug. 16, Bradley was hired as an assistant girls volleyball coach at Case High School, where the boy attends school and plays volleyball.

Bradley was suspended Sept. 23, after the allegations surfaced, and she has since resigned from her school position, Linda Flashinski, spokeswoman for the Racine Unified School District, said in an interview. She was not a teacher at the school, Flashinski said.

The complaint says the boy's mother told a Racine County sheriff's investigator that Bradley let him use her cell phone, let him drive her car though he was not licensed and let him use her credit card so that he could play poker and make bets on a Web site.

The mother said her son's grades dropped from A's and B's to D's and F's and that he has run away from home at least three times since being confronted about the relationship, the complaint says.

The mother had suspected that her son was having an affair with Bradley after she found a computer message. She thenbegan taping telephone conversations between Bradley and her son, the complaint says.

The boy told a sheriff's investigator that he had had sex with Bradley about five or 10 times.

This kid was riding on a high hog with this women. She loaned him her car, credit card to gamble, and was part of him crashing in school. That's not reality, and I don't know how emotionally stable he is, will some of these things get in the way. Some of these can turn into addictions. I am glad I don't have any kids, it would be hard on my heart to have to deal with this stuff.

I too am really trying to believe the boy was raped. But it isn't working. I remember 1968 too clearly.

I reffed HS and college volleyball for a number of years. I know of at least two female volleybal coaches at major colleges that were fired in mid-season for lesbian relationships with one of their players, and a male volleyball coach who was fired for a sexual relationship with his start player that went on for four years at college and earlier when he coached her in high school. I also know of at least two HS coaches who resigned or fired for similar reasons.

If you have a daughter that goes on to play college athletics, I would strongly suggest you do some research on the coach of the school. Married women are the safest bets closely followed by married men with married female assistants.

Children aren't children forever. Some parents have to let them make their own decisions but live with consequences.

you are correct....he has....he wasnt just getting some sex, now his entire scholastic time will be hard because of it.

Some will look up to him, but not many now. Before it was different because they hadnt been in trouble for it.

LOS ANGELES -- An Orange middle school teacher accused of having sexual contact with two 13-year-old boys who were former students is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

Sarah Suzanne Bench-Salorio, 28, of Orange, is charged with "multiple" counts of lewd acts with a child, according to Orange police Sgt. Dave Hill.

The suspect, who taught for two years at Santiago Charter Middle School, was arrested Tuesday, a day after one of the boys told his parents about the alleged contact with his former teacher, Hill said.

Bench-Salorio, who taught reading and English, was booked Wednesday at the Orange County Jail, with bail set at $1 million, a jail clerk said.

"Our investigation indicates that the teacher initiated the sexual contact, and that this contact took place over a period of several months," Hill said

it depends on the state. Some states permit taping of conversations as long as there is consent of one party -- that is -- the party taping. (Strange but true.) In this case, however, she is really a third party -- so that may not carry the day unless she had her son's approval.

I don’t think it is a matter of what we believe, or what the boy (or girl) wants. The idea of statutory rape is that the child can not consent by definition. It does not matter how much he or she “wants it” or even begs for it. It is up to the adult to say no.

What makes you think it's new? What is new is the recognition that it may be harmful rather than just "getting lucky."

The role differences are important. This is a betrayal of trust, of a fiduciary relationship, in effect, whether you get it or not.
