Up to 5,000 Americans unaccounted for in tsunami disaster: Powell

As many as 5,000 Americans are still unaccounted for a week after the world's deadliest tsunami pounded a dozen countries across the Indian Ocean, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said.

Powell told reporters aboard his plane en route to Bangkok that the confirmed toll of Americans still stood at 15 with a defense department worker listed as missing.

"The number of private citizens or citizens unaccounted for still lingers around 4-5,000," he said, adding the figure was based on phone calls from relatives or friends inquiring about their whereabouts.

Powell said this did not mean they were necessarily casualties in the catastrophe.

But he added: "We can't ignore the very distinct possibility that there are Americans within this number who have lost their lives. We just don't know that."

This figure seems way too high for me and I would like to see at least some indication that we even know these people are in Thailand.

Prostitution of all kinds is not a secret or unknown to the millions who visit Thailand every year for this expressed purpose many from the US.

Until AG John Ashcroft in conjunction with World Vision and other NGO's actually started a campaign to arrest and deport these US molestors nothing was being done.

The number may not be in the millions at least not any more but certainly many thousands of despicable creatures go to Thailand and other nations like Cuba to fulfill their sordid manias.

Let me try this again..I was commenting on the 15 reported missing Americans, and the number that Powell seemingly tossed out..of 5000 or so mising.. The US can track that number from passport control. Now I ask you..can you name any other situation where 5000 +/- Smericans overseas were "missing" for more than a week, and we wouldn't have hundreds of reports from local media..about distraut families?...It doesn't ring true..unless..

Millions go to Thailand every year for sex - especially, but not exclusively, for young boys. Others go with families, some are lepidopterists and go because of their butterflies. The fact remains, however, sex is a thriving industry there.

I'm gonna climb out on a limb here, a tad..and surmise that many of these missing American tourists may have been in Thailand for the wrong reasons..i.e.

Who said Thailand?....... You?

The article mentioned above uses the following.....

[....As many as 5,000 Americans are still unaccounted for a week after the world's deadliest tsunami pounded a dozen countries across the Indian Ocean, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said....]

...who's gonna report them missing...

The article: [..... "The number of private citizens or citizens unaccounted for still lingers around 4-5,000," he said, adding the figure was based on phone calls from relatives or friends inquiring about their whereabouts. ..]

I guess we will see as time progresses who, where there may have been if missing, etc.
