Photo family's amazing survival From correspondents in Stockholm January 2, 2005

A SERIES of heart-rending photos showing a mother dashing into the tsunami off Thailand in a desperate bid to save her family were cabled out around the world this week.

But the family's fate remained unknown until today, when the Swedish mum came forward to say they had all survived.

"I was yelling at them to run, but they couldn't hear me," 37-year-old Karin Svaerd told the daily Expressen, describing her desperation as her three sons, brother and brother-in-law snorkelled in the water last Sunday, unaware of the pending danger.

The series of three pictures showed confused vacationers on the Ray Leh Beach in Krabi, Thailand, looking at the water receding before the tsunami hit the beach.

Another shot showed swimmers running in to shore once they saw the tower of water approaching.

But Mrs Svaerd, unlike everyone else in the picture, was running out toward the wave in a desperate bid to reach her family.

Her sons Anton, 14, Filip, 11 and Viktor, 10, could not see the wave. Witnesses heard her scream: "Oh my god, not my children!"

Today, Mrs Svaerd told Expressen: "I yelled 'run, run'." But her voice was drowned out by the roar of the water.

"I got 150 meters out before they started to run. By then they'd also seen the wave."

The family got caught in the tsunami and was tossed around underwater. But one by one they managed to get to their feet and make it to higher ground.

An hour after the first wave hit, the family members, including Mrs Svaerd's husband and sister, who were sunbathing on the beach, had managed to locate each other.

"We all survived. That feeling is hard to describe," she said.

If you are an Arabic christian God's name is Allah. Allah is arabic for God. I attended an arabic seaking Catholic church and the whole mass was in arabic. The hebrew contraction for God is four letters YHVH.

At least it serves to remind us all that, even in all the destruction and loss of life, God was there, and is there now and will be there forever. I have faith that He is in charge, and we are here for Him and His purpose. We weren't placed here to understand the reasons for why things happen here. We are here to glorify Him and to serve Him. The outpouring of love for these victims is God's love and mercy hard at work, and it is beautiful to see.

"Allah is arabic for God."

Thanks.

Now I know how to write God in more than one language:

English = God

Arabic = Allah

Spanish = Dios

Latin = Deus (I think)

Italian = Dio (I think)

French = not sure, but I think it's Deu?

I believe that we are judged on our intent, our actions, and our faith.

All this spelling stuff will only be judged by humans.

I too have been bothered by these photos since I saw them on Thursday. I don't know how, but its clear from the photo that this is a substantive family. I thought it was a tragedy to lose good people like that. Its a great relief to know they are OK.

To people of the Jewish persuasion, the true name of the Lord is so holy that anything that bears any resemblance to an actual name is to be avoided. Many feel that God is to close to being a name.

This poster, of the Christian persuasion, knows that god is only a term for that which people consider deities in general. However, this poster is usually willing to defer to the sensibilities of other followers of the lord of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

I wonder how she discovered that they were in the photo series? Amazing story, at any rate. Thank God they're safe!

All of the people who say that that woman was an idiot for rescuing her children don't understand that when you are put in a situation like that and you don't do the right thing by potentially sacrificing yourself -- what the result is, is that you end up having to live with your decision for the rest of your life. In other words. a coward dies a thousands deaths, the brave but one.

Thanks. From the photos, one would have thought this entire family was doomed.

After watching depressing, heart-wrenching coverage on CNN all afternoon, I'm very, very glad they survived.

That is only one name for God, and that is God. It certainly isn't Allak.

Too bad. Allak sounds like a such a friendly name.

Like you and many others, I too have not been able to let go of the horror contained in those three pictures. What a wonderful and glorious miracle for this family to have survived intact. Thank God! Yes, it is truly a wonderful gift for them and for us.
