Photo family's amazing survival From correspondents in Stockholm January 2, 2005
A SERIES of heart-rending photos showing a mother dashing into the tsunami off Thailand in a desperate bid to save her family were cabled out around the world this week.
But the family's fate remained unknown until today, when the Swedish mum came forward to say they had all survived.
"I was yelling at them to run, but they couldn't hear me," 37-year-old Karin Svaerd told the daily Expressen, describing her desperation as her three sons, brother and brother-in-law snorkelled in the water last Sunday, unaware of the pending danger.
The series of three pictures showed confused vacationers on the Ray Leh Beach in Krabi, Thailand, looking at the water receding before the tsunami hit the beach.
Another shot showed swimmers running in to shore once they saw the tower of water approaching.
But Mrs Svaerd, unlike everyone else in the picture, was running out toward the wave in a desperate bid to reach her family.
Her sons Anton, 14, Filip, 11 and Viktor, 10, could not see the wave. Witnesses heard her scream: "Oh my god, not my children!"
Today, Mrs Svaerd told Expressen: "I yelled 'run, run'." But her voice was drowned out by the roar of the water.
"I got 150 meters out before they started to run. By then they'd also seen the wave."
The family got caught in the tsunami and was tossed around underwater. But one by one they managed to get to their feet and make it to higher ground.
An hour after the first wave hit, the family members, including Mrs Svaerd's husband and sister, who were sunbathing on the beach, had managed to locate each other.
"We all survived. That feeling is hard to describe," she said.

Et tu, Max?
Your tag line tells me all I need to know about you, toots.
You think too highly of yourself.
Get over yourself.
It is one thing to have the oddball thought in your head -- it's another to post that oddball thought on a thread celebrating the fact that a half-dozen people managed to AVOID DEATH that 150,000 people were unable to do.
Got any 'innocuous' 9/11 comments, say about maybe how great the view was from the plane in the seconds before it hit the WTC? Or the great view those on the upper floor of the WTC got of the plane as it hurtled towards them?
IMO, a lot of posters around here have been PROVING that they are idiots this week.
Good grief, Howlin, what has happened here?
Your first rant was enough.
Take some advice: untorque.
It may or may not have been unwise or indiscreet to have posted the body surfing comment, considering the reaction it elicited from you. I think the comment non malicious, though.
But I think your personal attacks extremely inappropriate on a thread such as this.
I too looked at the waves in the images and my first thought was they didn't *appear* too threatening.
Yes, some have '...opened their mouths, as it were, and removed all doubt! ;>)
But most of them are old members, the real malcontents and unappeasables who think we're all crazy because we don't have the extreme right wing views they do. If you try to debate them, all the talk about is "It's not in the Constitution," "You clearly don't understand the Constitution," blah blah blah. They look down their noses at the rest of us because we don't hold the mean=spirited views they do.
Whoever they are, they're not people who have the same vlues that we do, which, of course, THEY mock us for. They make FR look like crap, IMO.
Hey, Ready; I've been missing seeing you; I guess we've just been on different threads. Good to see you.
I don't have much patience for inanity in the face of tragedy.
Well, he explained what he meant, but that didn't seem good enough for you for some reason.
I tweaked him a little bit because I knew he TOO was going to get skewered for his remark.
Relax; it's just the internet.
Don't read many books, do you? Just like the covers?
Hey, wanna go shopping with me for our "DULY ENSHRINED" box's??
I guess that's why it's called tshirthell.
Who needs to lighten up now?
You know, 9/11 happened in my backyard.
Like the rest of the country we were saturated with photo's of that day.
Our community lost no fewer than 36 people that day.
There came a time when I finally had refocus on something else.
I couldn't bear to see another news article about one of my neighbors, showing grief about losing a loved one.
So refocused and rented as many comedy DVD's as I could.
You made your point about 4 or 5 posts ago.
