This isn't a "crash" site, is it?

I'm operating in the assumption (hopefully correct) that everyone smart enough to read and post on FreeRepublic knows that the "business end" of the mission "landed" and the entry heat shield "crashed".

They found the British Beagle ! lololol just kidding.

They actually think they did find Beagle and reported it about a year ago. When they did the report was worded unfortunately. They think they found the remains at the bottom of a big crater. The way the worded it, however, made it sound like the crater was a new one that they hadn't notice before.

From the BBC article on this on 12/29/2003:

Beagle 2 may have fallen down a crater on Mars recently discovered near where the lander was due to touch down, scientists on the project have said.

Well duh! I wonder what might have caused this newly discovered crater? The Beagle, maybe?

Amazing. Did you overlay the left and right PAMCAM images yourself ?

Not much of an impact crator or obvious surface abrassions. the ground there must be pretty hard. I know the heat shield is pretty light weight, but if you dropped it down on most Earth soils, you would expect at least some surface markings. The ground is probably like a desert permafrost tundra. Tough place to dig a hole I'm sure.

Yep, me 'n Phil figured that out last year when these pics first started coming down. Anytime you get and L and an R pancam shot you can make a stereo glyph.

I was thinking the same thing. With so much less atmosphere to slow it's decent, I would have pictured a deeper hole.

Perhaps it was more of an angular entry with some skipping on the surface ?
