Earlier today, responding to these remarks by the UN's Jan Egeland
But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.
"It is beyond me why are we so stingy, really," the Norwegian-born U.N. official told reporters. "Christmastime should remind many Western countries at least, [of] how rich we have become."
"There are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy," he said, adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."
I sent this email to Jan Egeland
You seem to be under the impression that the ONLY way that individuals can donate money to charities and disasters is if the government TAKES the money from them in the form of taxes and gives it to YOU.
Leaving aside the fact that the UN is the last place I want MY government to give money (see Oil for Food scandal), we don't need to be taxed into giving. The United States is a generous country and we WILL give a lot of money to this cause; we're just not going to give it to YOU to spend as you see fit.
The people who really need and deserve the money will get it, without you having the opportunity to cut your slice off of it.

P.S. Forget about a UN and/or world tax; it's not going to happen.
No, that's Phuket.
I will give to Franklin Graham.
We are sending assessment teams to see which countries need what and where to distribute wisely...There are private agencies getting the medical emergency relief underway,too...This will end up being a gigantic relief effort.
BRILLIANT!
I believe Krauthammer actually said the Frenchies' donations were in "whine".
Well said!
The STINGY story is coming up on O'reilly soon.
Don't worry, JOHN GIBSON is filling in today.
That's the only reason I'm watching.
Can we get out of the UN yet?
It's wonderful to see the UN step in it again. Let's pile on...let's get W really F'N pissed at this POS organization and cut their funds, and boot their sorry asses to Geneva.
Have you seen the cr@p CNN's been putting out to cover this guy's butt? And BTW, apparently the UN wants us to give more money way ahead of time. No ponying up bucks in response to a disaster. Ohhhh nooo, they've got to have lots more money way ahead of time. Uh huh.
I say we should give the next years UN dues to earthquake relief.
Sammon on FNC NOW!
Bill Sammon now on FOX.."once in a while the mask slips, and we get to see the true face of the UN".."THis is why people in the US really resent the UN"
WOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
You Rock!!!!
Off topic: Could Trent Duffy be stepping into a more prominent role in W's 2nd admin.?....Scott M. wasn't cutting it, and there's lots of good PR needed. Anyone know?
You spoke for me in this. I could not have said it better.
If we remain in the UN would you consider the ambassadors' job??
Patrick
And one other thing. How do we know the representatives sent from the UN won't end up demanding sexual favors from 12 year old girls in the area like they do in the Congo, in exchange for the food and assistance??
Too many criminals, despots and low-lifes that work for the UN. Too much history for even them to backpedal off from now.
