I disagree. In general, it's a sentence of indentured servitude to the man, and an eternal source of funds for the woman. That's the way the laws work today, at least here in New Jersey.

Unless the parties' names are Donald and Ivana Trump, or if they're both celebrities. Some Hollywood types go through spouses the way babies go through diapers, and they seem to do just fine. As for the average Joe, however, I think you're right... divorce can be devastating, both financially and emotionally.
