I was watching CNN's Inside Politics today (no transcript up yet) and they had a panel on - someone from the Washington Post, LA Times (Ron Brownstein) and Time magazine (Karen Tumulty). They were discussing our response to the disaster and the host of the program mentioned that the UN called our response "stingy". Then the panel went on to talk about how we "fumbled" this and were basically AWOL for one day. This just really made my blood boil. What have other countries done? The Brits say over 10,000 of their citizens were on holiday in that area. It's a large tourist area for Europeans. Where's the criticism of the EU and its member nations? And do we really have to play politics at a time like this?
not quite correct, the ORGANIZATION called EU pledged 4 million dollars, but a small member state such as, say, the Netherlands, has already pledged 3 million, and other member states are also doing that. Do not confuse the EU and it's member states. Thank you :-)
bttt
But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.
Perhaps Kofi should pony some of his laundered Iraqi money? Oops, he only likes spending our money.
Yeah, well let's think back a couple of years in NYC when the flatulent architects of cruel despotism at the UN were having union disputes with the cafeteria service. The cafeteria workers went on strike and those useless blowhards for fascism raided the lunchroom. Not only did they devour food that did not belong to them and that they were not entitled to, but they guzzled all of the booze and took everything that wasn't nailed down. Oh yeah and Oil for Corruption was "generous".
No credibility. Instead of kicking the UN out of the US, can't we just relocate them to a garbage scow? They belong there.
Thanks Soar5 for your precise statement to the truth. I think it is time for the UN facade to be revealed as to their total non-viablity. America does not need the UN and put all those POS UN members to pasture in Dafur. NSNR
What, you mean I can't ####### cuss?
Yeah, the UN needs to be lined up against a wall and engaged in a dodge ball game where they aren't allowed to use their hands to pick up the ball.
Some C-SPAN Kerry voter was getting his snide all in a dander wondering
when the Christian Relief agencies were going to kick in.
We can always hope that generous help comes from the long list
of Sikh, Buddist, Hindu and Islamic charities (at least those
that haven't squandered their resources on suicide vests).
"It is beyond me why are we so stingy, really," the Norwegian-born U.N. official told reporters. "Christmastime should remind many Western countries at least, [of] how rich we have become."
"There are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy," he said, adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."
Where is the generous donation from that venerable, caring, reliable, trustworthy, dependable, strong, courageous, compassionate, always-there-when-you-need-them, leader in the fight against terrorism, honest nation France?
The UN, which stole billions from the mouths of hungry Iraqi children which literally resulted in their deaths, is calling us stingy? They have some gall.

And here's the webcast the the UN presser.....

"Cnn misquoted me and have since corrected this. "
In case you'd like to check what he really said....
He said something to the effect of "Well, maybe if the UN WOULD PAY THEIR PARKING TICKETS we could send a few more million over there!"
Very good for Bennett. Is there anyone in the U.S., besides Clinton perhaps, who doesn't hate the UN?
Didn't read carefully enough the first time. Good for Steve Malzberg.
exactly...the UN badmouths us, but we pay 21% of their budget...let the EU support the UN. And countries such as India, who refused to aid us and the people of Iraq due to the UN's stance should seek aid from the UN only...they made their bed, sleep in it.
we should only send aid to those countries helping us in the war on terror. You're either with us or you're against us...
