UN calls US response to tsunami disaster "stingy"
CNN Inside Politics | December 27, 2004 | CNN

I was watching CNN's Inside Politics today (no transcript up yet) and they had a panel on - someone from the Washington Post, LA Times (Ron Brownstein) and Time magazine (Karen Tumulty). They were discussing our response to the disaster and the host of the program mentioned that the UN called our response "stingy". Then the panel went on to talk about how we "fumbled" this and were basically AWOL for one day. This just really made my blood boil. What have other countries done? The Brits say over 10,000 of their citizens were on holiday in that area. It's a large tourist area for Europeans. Where's the criticism of the EU and its member nations? And do we really have to play politics at a time like this?

I'm surprised they took time out of their bashing of Israel to slam us.

Their station in life is pointing out how little America is giving to the world because we haven't placed the entire planet on welfare.

Okay, we'll put the rest of the world on welfare - in exchange for their ETERNAL SERFDOM!

SERVICE AND GLORY!

Well, in their defense, we have some Jews over here too.

Be honest, some days don't you wish Jim would let us use profanity?

Absolutely. But I find not using profanity encourages creativity:

live my life as I would be if I had kept all my previous resolutions.

In 2000 I resolved to make no more resolutions and have faithfully kept that resolution.

From an article on Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A tsunami alert system in Hawaii that warns Pacific countries about devastating tidal waves detected the earthquake that led to the destruction across Indian Ocean nations.

But the absence of an alert system in Asia meant the information could not be sent out fast enough.

So, of course, the losses are our fault.

Does someone have the text of the Canadian who raised he!! about American giving help to other countries and no country helping Americans during disasters?

Was this it?

The Kinks, "Catch Me Now I'm Falling"

I remember, when you were down
And you needed a helping hand
I came to feed you
But now that I need you
You won’t give me a second glance
Now I’m calling all citizens from all over the world
This is captain america calling
I bailed you out when you were down on your knees
So will you catch me now I’m falling

Help me now I’m calling you
Catch me now I’m falling
I’m in your hands, it’s up to you
Catch me now I’m falling

I remember when you were down
You would always come running to me
I never denied you and I would guide you
Through all of your difficulties
Now I’m calling all citizens from all over the world
This is captain america calling
I bailed you out when you were down on your knees
So will you catch me now I’m falling

Help me now I’m calling you
Catch me now I’m falling
I’m in your hands, it’s up to you
Catch me now I’m falling

When you were broke you would come to me
And I would always pull you round
Now I call your office on the telephone
And your secretary tells me that she’s sorry,
But, you’ve gone out of town.

This is captain america calling
This is captain america calling

Help me now I’m calling you
Catch me now I’m falling
I’m in your hands, it’s up to you
Catch me now I’m falling

Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling

I stood by you through all of your depressions
And I lifted you when you were down
Now it’s your chance to do the same for me
I call your office and your secretary tells me
That you’ve gone out of town

This is captain america calling
This is captain america calling

Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling

I was the one who always bailed you out
Of your depressions and your difficulties
I never thought that you would let me down
But the next time you’re in trouble
Better not come running to me

Now I’m calling all citizens from all over the world
This is captain america calling
I bailed you out when you were down on your knees
So will you catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling

Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling

"The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies asked for $6.6 million in emergency aid and the World Food Program appealed for $1.5 million.

The U.S. plans to give $15 million, Secretary of State Colin Powell told reporters in Washington. The European Commission said it will donate up to $30 million to aid people in the affected areas, on top of $3 million it allocated to the Red Cross yesterday. Australia's government said the nation will give $7.7 million to the quake zone. "

Canada pledges $4 million in aid
Last Updated Mon, 27 Dec 2004 18:39:38 EST
OTTAWA - Defence Minister Bill Graham defended the $4 million Canada is providing in relief efforts to Southeast Asia in the wake of the deadly tsunami, promising that more aid is coming.

"This is an immediate response not the last response," Graham said at a news conference to announce Canada would provide an additional $3 million to the $ 1 million already announced Sunday.

WALLACE: Are you picking up any concern behind the scenes, Mike, about the handling of this initially? ALLEN: Well, (UNINTELLIGIBLE) is the president's radio address on Saturday was about our duty to our fellow man. And here you have a disaster that's now more than seven times the toll from 9/11. But it's a reminder, and Bill Schneider mentioned this at the beginning, things that happen in the Bay of Bengal just don't strike us the way that things happen in Bethesda do.

Allen obviously is a moron. And just how much aid poured into the US from the Bay of Bengal after this years hurricanes? Anyone see all those Sri Lankan airliners bringing food and water to Miami?

Perhaps if we send another 15 billion dollars, over a 10-year period, to Africa we wouldn't be considered stingy.

LOL! I have made that resolution numerous times too. That kind of gives me an escape hatch from the one I am making this time, just in the almost certain case that I fail again.

Well, if you're still making resolutions then you've already failed the "No More Resolutions" resolution.
