Semi Truck Nearly Split in Half by Train
12/22/04 -- A train versus semi accident closed a Livingston county road for several hours Wednesday night.
The Michigan State Police Brighton Post told 6 News that the accident happened around 7 PM at the Burkhart-Grand River intersection near Howell.
Officials say that semi truck was literally split in half.
Amazingly, there were no injuries.
Some fuel was spilled on the tracks, but has since been cleaned up.
State Police continue to investigate.
Mom always said - don't park on the tracks.
Split in half? Right down the middle?! Lengthwise?
Pictures please!
I live a couple of miles away, but I didn't hear any sirens. I'll have to claim "hard of hearing" on that one!
"Officials say that semi truck was literally split in half. "
Making it truly a SEMI truck.
One does wonder why the truck was parked on the tracks?
I don't see where it was parked. Just wasn't moving fast enough.
The driver must have been terrified, while this was happening.
Go to any RR crossing for the same RR and get their 800 number and report it. To be sure they get the message, tell them you are also going to call your local state transportation board and the federal Surface Transporation Board to report the incident.
One time, my passenger train, traveling at 80mph, slowed to a controlled stop, a good mile before the next station. When I contacted the engineer, he was killin' himself laughing, and caholed me to come up front. When I got there, I witnessed a nervous semi-truck driver, attempting to raise the crossing gate that had come down between his cab and his load. Ha! Bumber-to bumper traffic at RR crossings can be hazardous to yer load!
The headline reads: "nearly split in half." The copy says "literally split in half." Which is it? Or in the post-Clinton world "literally"="nearly."
What can the RR do in a situation like this? Can you open the crossing control shed, shut off the lights and raise the gate, and then flag your train through the crossing after the truck clears it??
After we came to a stop, the gates went up, as they're speed sensitive AND timed. The guy got in his truck and beat it, but now I had to flag our way across, as other dummies insisted on taking the crossing. Eh!

That was the first thing I did, once I quit hyperventilating.
