Massachusetts was the only state that had a population decline - albeit down a slight 3,800 people, or 0.1 percent, to 6.41 million. Demographers speculated it could have been caused by an exodus of people leaving to escape rising costs in the Boston area.

Hell with John Fn Kerry robbing everybody blind up there I'd be running from there too!
In other words the sane part. Where they actually obey stop lights.
Funny, despite your accurate description I'd like to retire to Maine!
My father was born in Bangor and spent the growing season through his younger years in Newport. He still has some land and a cottage on Lake Sebasticook and I'd really like to build one next door in a few years. While Newport hasn't been completely immune to the liberal infection, it is isolated and just back-woods enough that they haven't taken over yet. But the transformation is underway nonetheless.
Regardless, I love the state, the scenery, the wilderness, and especially the winters! I couldn't retire anywhere that didn't have nice, snowy winters. That doesn't leave me with too many choices, especially if I had to narrow it down to red-states only! Besides, I throroughly enjoy being the thorn-in-the-side to my liberal neighbors 8^)

There are some choices in red states - the Flag Staff area in Arizona, Colorado, the North Carolina mountains, Montana, Idaho, North and South Dakota, etc.
I do love Maine and want to stay, but it is getting too expensive to live on a retirment alone. We are bleeding the productive young people and replacing them with the unproductive welfare weasels. We can't sustain that trend much longer.
That's why I finally moved from MN this year!
No need to speculate, it's definately the rising costs. Same thing is happening in New York.
Having lived in MA and NH its a wonder anyone live in New England, winter there remorselessly long.
I previously posted this in one of the post-election threads:
I'm not so sure that's what is happening in NH. The results map, by county, doesn't fit the Mass. transplant theory. That being said, I don't have a counter-theory, unless we're being invaded by VT'ers.
My wife and I have considered NH, BUT she prefers warmer, SO who do you think will win out?
I'm curious what the map looked like from the last (or last few) election(s). The one thing that stands out is the fact that all of the counties are lighter shades of red and blue. I wonder if there is a trend in any of the counties from from dark red to pink (or vice versa for that matter).
You might very well be getting infections from VT, too. Otherwise my (and many other's) theory may be bunk.
LOL! Don't feel too bad, I too was a long-time "Masshole refugee" theory supporter. Now I'm left wondering what is going on with my fellow Yankees
I am moving out of Mass because I am getting married and we want to have children... we cannot raise children in this state.
Don't worry, if they can't find a way to BUY your kids, they'll find a way to TAKE your kids.
You are right to flee the centers of open wickedness in this country. Remember what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah.
North Dakota is up 998 people! This is big news up here, where depopulation is the #1 social issue.
maybe they are just relocating to new hampshire. i'm surprised they've only lost 4,000 considering the government that runs that state.
I have never been to mass exodus, don't plan on ever going to GODFORSAKENLAND
When I lived in Orlando, Florida my fest friend was from Banger,Ma. Military life let you see lots of different places to live.
Must be getting more lonesome all the time up there.
