A Church of England bishop has used his Christmas message to argue that Britain is still a Christian country rather than a multi-faith society.
The Bishop of Lichfield, the Rt Rev Jonathan Gledhill, also attacked the decision of some schools to abandon traditional Nativity plays and carol services.
"We are told it is to protect people of other faiths, which is strange, because you will rarely hear people of other faiths complaining about Christmas," he said.
"The other reason we are given is that Britain is no longer a Christian country. I just don't buy that."
The bishop said the 2001 national census had established that 71 per cent of the population identified themselves as Christian, with other religions making up just five per cent.
"I'm not trying to denigrate people of other faiths; I give thanks for all the good things that people of other cultures bring to our country; I'm committed to a multi-cultural Britain and to working with the leaders of other faith communities.
"I'm not saying it is okay to ignore their feelings, their aspirations and needs. I am saying that, even if our legislators don't always know about it, Britain is clearly not a multi-faith country, but a Christian one.
"I suspect that some people will find this statement offensive, but it will not be offensive to people of other faiths who, when I meet with them, often describe Britain as a Christian country.
"What puzzles them is how we have allowed Christian standards of morality and justice to be swamped by a superficial consumerism."
I wonder what C.S. Lewis would think of current-day Britain, and greater Europe?
"The ultimate destiny is not Christian or secular. It's Christian or Muslim"
That statement sends shivers up my spine because I am afraid that you are correct. I do take comfort from knowing that God (Jehovah not Allah) is sovereign and in the end things will go His way. Of course, there is that freewill thing that allows us to mess the world up until He decides enough is enough.
One cannot help wondering if millions of people in the West have a cultural death wish or if they have a subconscious desire from Muslim domination, perhaps due to the uncertainties they find in Western Civilization and the perceived certainties of Islam, mistaking Muslim certainty for a knowledge of truth. Or perhaps Western Leftists are so angry and guilt-ridden about the imperfections and injustices of Western Civilization that they want to destroy it, no matter what would replace it.
If this hypothesis is not correct, one wonders what else could cause millions of Westerners to strive so dilligently for their own destruction, the destruction of Western Civilization and the destruction of Christianity.
...subconscious desire FOR Muslim domination...
Church of England? aren't they the ones that support ordaining practicing homosexuals in direct conflict to God's word? This guy probably isn't even a Christian, how could he say if England is a Christian country is or not? His church doesn't even know what Christian means anymore.
Or cultural guilt trip.
Sinners very often would like to associate with like sinners or legitimize sin whereby they believe they are not sinners. Think dope legalization, same sex marriage push, promiscuity normalization, wealth condemnation.
There is a culture war promulgated by a frustrated leftist leadership and sustained by their naive (guilt and sin ridden) cannon fodder followers.
