In a lengthy and candid interview with Newsweek, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani seemed to acknowledge that the controversy over Bernard Kerik's failed bid to run the Department of Homeland Security has made him anxious about his consulting business, Giuliani Partners, of which Giuliani-Kerik is an offshoot division. Giuliani said repeatedly that Kerik's role in the firm is very limited, representing "less than 5 percent" of its business, Senior Writer Charles Gasparino reports in the December 27 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, December 20).
"He's not part of Giuliani Partners," the former mayor said.
Giuliani says his firm, which specializes in crisis management and corporate security, hasn't lost any clients because of the controversy, but he acknowledged that there's no way to gauge the effect on efforts to land new business.
Gasparino also reports that people who know Giuliani say he's starting to lose patience with Kerik, particularly since Giuliani is often mentioned as a potential presidential candidate in 2008. These people believe Kerik's days at the firm are numbered, but Giuliani denies it.
Newsweek has also learned that just after Kerik was nominated to head the Department of Homeland Security, editor Judith Regan -- with whom Kerik had an affair -- told one person that she was contacted by a Kerik associate who indicated how Kerik might characterize their relationship when asked about it during a background check.
Kerik, this person says, would describe it as a "brother-sister" relationship, reports Gasparino. Regan took that as code for her to mischaracterize what she has told people was a sexual affair.
Through a spokeswoman at her publishing company, Regan -- who published Kerik's autobiography -- declined to comment.
Gasparino reports that Jess Walter, the writer who worked with Kerik on the autobiography, had complained to officials at Regan Books that there were inconsistencies in some of the material provided by Kerik, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
One example included a letter Kerik received from police officers who found a flag at the World Trade Center a day after the 9/11 attacks.
Walter said he believed Kerik may have hyped a portion of the letter, in particular the line: "You lead and we will follow."
Kerik's attorney, Joseph Tacopina, did not comment, but he had one of the officers who wrote the letter contact Newsweek to say the account in the book was accurate.
Eeeeewwwwww!
For her sake, I hope it didn't get so far that she gave testimony. What a stupid mess.
Actually, it's a good thing this came out now. Some in the GOP were ready to crown the philandering tax and tax "Republican" Guiliani as our presidential candidate in 2008.
I agree in a lot of ways this was a blessing in disguise. Although I always had my doubts about whether a pro-abortion candidate could ever get on the GOP ticket.
A fish stinks from the head down....another major crooked top cop in NYC....
And to think how close he might have come to being the head of Homieland Security....
looks like the demonrat hit squad may have actually done some good in spite of themselves
bet they hate that....
Naaa they hate conservatives more than they hate crooks....they just happen to catch both in one fish this time
imo
Is sister-schtopping common in NYC?
Whaaaa?...Giulani claims he was duped by Kerik?
Bwahahahahahaha
Hillary has gotta be lovin' it
imo
You took the words right out of my mouth. They say there's nothing like a little incest to keep the kids happy. LOL
NY is one of the few states where it is legal to marry your first cousin. Brother-Sister love is another thing.
LOL! The first thing I thought of when I read the headline was, "Are they accusing Bernie Kerik of incest?"
Incest = Fun for the whole family!
Reminds me of the old joke.
A West Virginia was upset and broke off his engagemnet. When he was asked why he responded that she was a virgin. His friend responded "good call, if she's not good enough for her family, she's not good enough for yours"
I don't think Guiliani screwed it all up - Kerik screwed it up, and the White House vetting crew screwed it up, too.
I don't care what some 3rd party tells you, you always do your own investigation.
This has HIllary written all over it. That's why it is staying in the media, long after we all realize Kerik is toast.
Maybe in West Virginia...
Explain to me how Rudy, who cut taxes repeatedly while Mayor of what is one of the most liberal cities in the country, is a 'tax and tax' Republican?
I am not particulatly excited about him being president either, but lets keep the debate this side of sanity.
The democrats couldn't even make this stuff up. Is the republican party on a suicide mission??
Unless he didn't sleep with her, that's just sick.
And they make fun of Arkansas and West Virginia??
