If they want to win the WH again, they better put up a real conservative. It don't matter much to be if it's a liberal Democrat or a liberal Republican. A liberal in the WH is another, and maybe final nail in our coffin.

I fear that people here will not learn that lesson - and will march out a ticket with two little known white conservatives using abortion as the litmus test - against a ticket with the first woman presidential candidate, and the first Hispanic (Richardson) as VP.
while it is true that a republican cannot win without the conservative base, it is also true that the conservative base alone cannot elect a republican president. you need a coalition of the conservative base, plus some independents, and increasingly someone who appeals to Hispanics.
no. what is simply means is that we have to look carefully at the dynamics of the 2008 election in particular. Our best candidate, Jeb Bush, won't run and couldn't win anyway because of the dynasty thing, so he is out. Colin Powell would also win going away, but he's not running either.
we will be running against a celebrity in 2008, and the media attention that the first woman/hispanic ticket will get should not be underestimated. We did not win the 2004 election in a landslide, 1984 was a landslide, 2004 was a 60K vote swing win in Ohio.

Colin Powell's poll and approval ratings are the highest of any public official in the US. And yes, that does matter, as we saw in 2004 - Bush retaining an approval rating above 50% was an essential measure of whether he was going to win.
My opinion on his abortion stance is the same as it is with Rudy - I may not agree with it, but if elected president, neither man would advance the pro-choice position - we'd continue with whatever the status quo was on 1/20/2009. Could you say the same about Hillary?
That's the choice in 2008 regarding abortion (and 2nd A also really) - status quo, or Hillary's agenda. There is no Ronald Reagan warming up in the bullpen for us.

What are you going to tell me, that he's an internationalist? Last time I looked, Bush was voicing support for Kofi Annan and sending 15 billion to africa for AIDS. I don't see that Powell would make a bad president on policy matters.
And his position on the Second Amendment? How about illegal aliens? Any news there?

My point is, being a "moderate" Republican president doesn't mean much unless you can show me an aggressive leftist agenda these RINOs plan on advancing. Everyone here thinks Rudy would be spending night and day passing gun confiscation laws and opening abortion clinics - its an over-reaction.
For the record, I don't think Rudy will get the nomination. But for sure, we need to have a fair primary process that includes everyone - if we start off by essentially "litmus testing away" the guy who is polling #1 from entering the primary process - we are going to appear intolerant, and we will lose independent voters that we need to win the election.
Why not Santorum?
If that's the case, then why vote for him at all? If the President is truly that incapable of influencing policy and lawmaking, then why are you championing RINOs like Powell and Guiliani at all?

Putting my flame suit on, before I make a prediction:
In the presidential election of 2028, the Republican Party platform will likely not even _have_ a plank on abortion. If it still _does_, it will state that the party disapproves of abortion, but leaves the decision to individual conscience.
