GOP VOTERS STILL WANT GIULIANI FOR PREZ: POLL
New York Post ^ | 12/17/04 | IAN BISHOP

WASHINGTON — The stink of Bernard Kerik's rotten bid to become homeland security czar hasn't stuck to his chief cheerleader, Rudy Giuliani, who is a top pick for the presidency among Republicans, a new poll shows.

A whopping 68 percent of Republican voters want to see Giuliani run for the White House in 2008, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll — showing little fallout among the party base in the wake of Kerik's embarrassing exit.

[snip]

And it shows that if party faithful get their way, Giuliani would face off against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in an Empire State showdown — which Giuliani would win, 45 percent to 43 percent.

[snip]

Although she's a favorite among Dems, 50 percent of all voters don't want to see the former first lady run for the White House.

We need someone with serious third party type ideology running on the Republican ticket.

Paul's run for Prez on the Libertarian ticket means he's not going anywhere in the Republican party. He is a Libertarian, after all, not just in ideology but party affiliation (despite him running on the Republican ticket for Congress).

But hey, let him try--2008 should be a free-for-all.

Rush said a couple of days ago that he thought George Allen would be an excellent choice.

But wouldn't it make sense? I mean, Nixon's ghost technically hasn't run for President and would have a sizeable electoral base among fans of Unsolved Mysteries, Crossing Over with John Edward and Dionne Warwick's Psychic Friends Network.

At this early stage, George Allen is the guy I'm watching with interest. Hopefully he is able to spearhead some major initiatives for the President in the next Congress.

If the best the GOP can do for 2008, is a freaking RINO, instead of giving us a REAGAN, might as well just let the democrats win, what's the freaking difference?

I say if we want the best of both worlds, let's get Zell Miller to run. I think he's the best choice for president the GOP has.

I like Rudy but may have too many skeletons in the closet

Well, I'm not sure which side you are on, but most of the anti third party types want it both ways. They say the third party folks, whether Libertarians or Constitution Party, should join the Republican Party and try to make a difference within the party not outside of it. But then Paul runs as a Repub and wins handily each time, and the same people clamor that he isn't really a Repub. Well what's it going to be? Stay inside the GOP or work outside it. What is really at issue here is that mainstream Republicans don't want those pesky little ideologues actually pointing out that their actions don't match their rhetoric.

The operative word there is "may."

As someone who's lived here my entire life, I can tell you that there were personal allegations-some of which turned out to be true-about Rudolph Giuliani going back to his '89 mayoral run.

His figurative closet is a Shia' graveyard.

If only Zell was a few years younger I'd love to see it. Could you even imagine the 2008 presidential debates with Give 'em Hell Zell and whoever the Dims dared to run against him? Take me out to that ballgame.

Are they out of their minds??? They better hide their guns if he becomes president! No way I'd vote for him, even after how he pulled NYC through 9/11, because of his stance on gun control.

he isn't really a Repub

Paul runs on the Republican ticket, but he's a lifetime member of the Libertarian party. Which is it going to be for him? Either he's a Republican or he's a Libertarian. It's the height of hypocrisy to be a life member of one party and run in another party simply for the purpose of getting elected.

How many times do you need to be told that Jeb Bush has said over and over that he has absolutely zero interest in running for the presidency?

It's interesting how you tear down every single conservative except the one person who has no intention of running for president.

I wouldn't doubt that Rudy's personal life is like Pandora's box. I just hope that by the winter of '08, GOPers are as well informed about Rudy's public and private indiscretions as you are.

Fortunately, sitting here in December of 2004 with a month to go before Bush's inauguration, we are a long way from Iowa and New Hampshire and public opinion polls does not a President make.

The GOP is a convenient vehicle for his political ambitions, but people who believe that Ron Paul is a true Republican are deluding themselves.

Guliani would do us a greater service by taking the Hildabeast out in the 06 Senate race and leave the door open for a conservative in 08.

There's an idea that makes sense, though I still have to believe that the greatest favor the Dims can do for us is to serve up Hitlery as their nominee in 2008.

Oh. But isn't it the mainstreamers who are constantly telling us that we must sacrifice principle for the sake of electability. I don't think it is hypocritical at all. I think it is a good strategy. What does being a member of a party mean anyway? Does it mean you have to slavishly vote for the candidate of that party right or wrong? Does that mean Zell is no longer a Democrat? I would gladly vote for Ron Paul. I wouldn't vote for Rudy if you put a gun to my head. What does that make me? I think it makes me a real conservative.

But if you must have a "real" Republican name for '08 who is also a real conservative, how about Judge Roy Moore?
