GOP VOTERS STILL WANT GIULIANI FOR PREZ: POLL
New York Post ^ | 12/17/04 | IAN BISHOP

WASHINGTON — The stink of Bernard Kerik's rotten bid to become homeland security czar hasn't stuck to his chief cheerleader, Rudy Giuliani, who is a top pick for the presidency among Republicans, a new poll shows.

A whopping 68 percent of Republican voters want to see Giuliani run for the White House in 2008, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll — showing little fallout among the party base in the wake of Kerik's embarrassing exit.

[snip]

And it shows that if party faithful get their way, Giuliani would face off against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in an Empire State showdown — which Giuliani would win, 45 percent to 43 percent.

[snip]

Although she's a favorite among Dems, 50 percent of all voters don't want to see the former first lady run for the White House.

My point is that Rice has never run a statewide or national campaign. This is a significant obstacle to her candidacy. If you take a look at the base you have identified, you could plug Elizabeth Dole into most of those categories and play out the 2000 GOP nomination all over again.

In the 2000 campaign, Liddy Dole was a former Cabinet Secretary, without the extensive fundraising resources that are afforded to Governors, Senators and Congressmen. She had her husband's rolodex, but eventually those sources dried up. If Rice decided to run in '08, she would be similarly encumbered.

As far as GWB, absent a Jeb candidacy, I'm sure that he will follow Reagan's 11th Commandment and wait to pick a dog in the fight until a candidate's nomination has been all but assured. He is not going to play the Al Gore endorsement game and subject himself to any kind of electoral embarassment. Therefore, a GWB endorsement of Condi is highly unlikely.

I like Santorum, but I'll bolt if Tancredo is on the ticket, and I speak for a lot more Republicans than you'll ever admit.

LOL! Sorry, but that gives me the visual of a herd of stampeding RINO's, and it was funny! Blackbird.

I have to agree with you. I liked Rudy's handling of 9/11 but I don't agree with him on his moral stances.

I'd love to see Tancredo run for higher office, e.g. the governorship of the state of Colorado or a seat in the U.S. Senate.

Regretfully, I don't think there's a chance in hell of the party apparatus allowing that to occur.

And considering how they handled the task of defeating Ken Salazer, I'm not sure that I'd want the state party on my side in that particular fight.

(Dole)...but he was truly lackluster as a Presidential candidate.

That's the understatement of the year.

That one wasn't exactly a chart-topper, now was it?

Ron Paul has run for president on the Libertarian ticket. He lost, of course. He doesn't have enough name recognition to play with the big boys.

I don't know how 2008 is going to shake out, but, as much as I admire Rudy, he's too liberal to have much appeal in the South.

I'll never forget the time I saw Dole at a '96 campaign rally say "...and I'll be your Ronald Reagan if that's what you want me to be." Ouch.

But if making fun of him in order to make yourself look more conservative makes you feel better,
go right ahead.

The political spectrum has shifted leftward in my lifetime(50's to present).
Who used to be a moderate (like Bush) is now considered a conservative.
It's like creeping socialism, I don't think we should buy into it.
And if the GOP tries to ram a liberal like Guiliani down our throats,
the next administration will be democrat, Guaranteed!

All of this Condi, Rudy talk is making me completely loopy. While we're dealing in the absurd and unrealistic, why don't we consider the prospects of Richard Nixon's ghost against Hillary in '08.

post #2 I agree we don't need the baggage Giuliani brings with him. The Demo would tear us apart.

I knew he ran as a Libertarian. That is part of the point. We need someone with serious third party type ideology running on the Republican ticket. Then maybe we could actually do something silly like cutting spending.

I consider Paul a potential Libertarian/Conservative fusion candidate. He is a right libertarian, not a moral relativistic left libertarian. He is pro-life, anti-imigration, and anti-sovereignty sacrificing trade deals while still being staunchly free-trade.
