"But don't you think that the more sinister aspect of this laissez-faire 'capitalism' you espouse is an active interest in keeping a certain percentage of the population uneducated and desperate? Right now, Mexico has no interest in providing for its own population, because they can be farmed out to the U.S. In return, the U.S. has no interest in putting pressure on Mexico to reform, because Mexico is a source for an endless supply of cheap labor."

I like where you're going with this.

Let me add to it.

As long as a few people can cheat the system, the natural free market supply and demand policies will never correct inadequacies or inefficiencies in the system.

In addition, as long as some companies can gain a competitive edge over other companies by using government facilitated cheating, there will never be the political pressure on politicians to make the necessary reforms in OUR political and economic system.

What changes am I referring to?

How about eliminating government waste and scaling back the size of government

Trimming of government entitlement programs

Fair tax code which makes American business more competitive

Tort reform...the greatest killer of American ingenuity and entrpreneurism

The list goes on....

This is what the repubs need to concentrate on.

Some politicians are content to hold off REAL reforms to help American business, but instead reward the big money contributers UNDER THE TABLE using cheap labor as a payoff.

That is precisely what the Republican Party *would* do if they, imo, didn't have an agenda that was counter to America's interests and needs...
