BARRANQUILLA, Colombia -- Edgar Renteria has agreed to a four-year $40 million contract with the Red Sox today, giving Boston an All-Star shortstop.
"The biggest reason was that Boston is a traditional team," Renteria said poolside from his home in Colombia. "They won the Series this year and I like to play on a winning team like Boston, St. Louis or any team that has the opportunity to win."
Renteria, who played for St. Louis last season, is a 4-time All-Star, 2-time Gold Glove winner. He has a career average of .289.

I like this guy, scrappy player who won the World Series for the Marlins back in 97.
I was sad to see Orlando go as well. Renteria is a he!! of a SS, though. I'd really like to see our pitching staff shorn (?) up a bit.
Adios Pedro.
Renteria?? I think I had a bad bout of it after eating at the mexican diner the other night.
The Sox? Oh, they mean the other Sox, the Red Sox.
I liked him too but Renteria is another solid glove and a much better hitter.
Cabrera has a solid glove and had great post season. Renteria does not get you the 30+ wins that Pedro/Lowe did.
My Sox need pitching! Sign Clement! Sign Hudson! Sign Johnson!
At the rate the Yankees and Red Sox sign free agents it make we wonder what the players in their respective minor league organizations think.
They should have moved Pokey Reese to SS. Much better fielder than Renteria or Cabrera. Plus Pokey has way above average speed on the bases.
Yeah, really. I'm surprised by this. Cabrera looked like he actually was hungry and wanted to play. He was great for us at SS. I hope Renteria shows as much desire.
I don't know anything about Boston or New York. The only Sox that matter are in Chicago.
Sox have solid SS prospects so this signals that Epstein is going for the Gold again. But Pedro for Wells can't be the final pitching move.
You should get some help for your delusional condition.
Look - I know it will NEVER matter - but as a White Sox fan I always have a sliver of hope that for once, maybe we did something good. Don't make me suffer dissappointment from the time I see the headline to the article comes up - please say "Red Sox" instead of "Sox" (I know it's the headline the globe would use, but you bracket)
I cannot "high" nor "five" you enough
If you are a sportsfan and live in Chicago, you learn to live with delusions. I don't need help, I'm not in denial. :^}
Say it ain't so....
It's the first really bad news I've gotten of FR in a while. I predicted we would lose him to the Sox...just like the Series. We should have signed him while he was hitting .250 this year.
now, we need a leadoff man/second baseman and a shortstop.
The Cardinals like recycling players...I bet Polanco is back at second. Maybe they'll have the money to get Tim Hudson.
The Sox picked up a good player. They paid big for him, too.
I live in Boston and had been the same way until late October 2004. Stay strong.
This is a travesty for the St Louis Cardinals. This guy was the most reliable man in the lineup. I am very disappointed that St Louis did not re-sign him. Congrats to the Sox. They will love him in Boston.
