Part of the hard work of civilization is teaching young to be able to distinguish between the good and the bad in all aspects of life. If we teach our young children to obey the 10 Commandments and to obey the laws of the land, but don't teach them to realize that Johann Sebastian Bach is superior to Dimebag Abbott, we have failed as parents and mentors. If a person has gone through 12 or 13 years of education and has not developed an appreciation for the greatest artistic achievements of mankind, that education has been an utter failure.

While laissez-faire is the correct approach to economics it has no place in the realm of aesthetics or morality. A confidant civilization imposes its morality and aesthetics on it young people. Yes, you heard it right. We impose. The Rousseauian noble savage is a myth. Left unchecked and untutored the savage will never attain nobility......

so instead let it just be known that thru these eyes Darrell was incredibly warm, open, fun, nutty, forthcoming, talented, embracing, unpretentious, accommodating and he always had a very attractive innocence about him that obviously made him never threatening and always welcoming.

It's not my world. I don't like metal music. I dislike many types of music, opera included, however I don't malign people who perform music I don't like. What really makes me angry is that not only does Grim malign Darryl Abbots music, he maligns his fans, his cultural contributions and his life. That is obscene considering how little he knows about the world he lived in.

Very good question, because the other day it was only classically-trained piano players who were allowed to define what "Music" is... So, if VOYAGER doesn't play any, then by the rules imposed by those on his side of the argument, he has to stop talking about this issue.

I agree with what you say. However, I think that I can speculate on the type of music that will endure 100 years from now. It will be the music that ennobles and uplifts. It will be the music that inspires. It will be the music that is recognizable and coherent (that doesn't mean dull). The screeching heavy metal sound may be fun for a while, and it may get you fired up, but that kind of thing just can't last. And the "kill the cops, f**k the hoes" variety will definitely not last.

There's plenty of such music in the rock paradigm. Rush, for example. It's possible that speed metal per se will not be one of the genres that survives.

Like I said it's awfully hard to predict what in the arts will end up retaining popularity in the future.

It will all depend, as it does now, on where you live, your education, and social position. It may surprise you to know that the majority of people in the world have never heard of the great classical composers or their compositions.

Believe it or not, they are not all barbarians. Knowledge of classical music isn't required in order to be a good person.

I write this not to praise punk or diminish rock and roll, as I am interested in neither except for scholarly reasons. I believe, too, that the superior man seeks the Apollonian in art rather than the Dionysian, but the relativists might take exception to this...and there certainly are exceptions to my rule.

I have to disagree with you. You are trying to focus on the individual, and I am trying to say that there are objective criteria that transcend any particular individual. You can be a good person and listen to heavy metal, just as you can be a good person and shoot heroin. I'm not talking about the person. And I'm not saying that ALL heavy metal is bad, I'm sure you can find exceptions to any rule. I am saying that, objectively speaking, and on balance, the heavy metal screechy depressing crap just really doesn't make that much of a contribution to our society. That's not hateful, and it's not elitist, and I really don't care one way or the other. I'm just trying to make what I believe to be an objective comparison.

Why would you even want to compare Verdi and Abbott? Music cannot be measured on a scale. Either you like certain music or you don't. Unless you are willing to grant haters of Verdi to decide what music is or isn't culturally uplifting for you, why would you assume anyone would care what you think is culturally uplifting for them?

I think you might be surprised at what classical music lovers thought of Ellington when he was alive. If they had been in charge of what music was allowable, Ellington probably would have been banned.
