With Crighton in combination with Stossel, I expect this to be worth a watch.

When he wrote "The Andromeda Strain" ...I did not know he wrote that. Saw the movie years ago when I was a kid.

They both share libertarian-minded views in common. Crichton has some good things to say about Peter W. Huber's conservative environmental manifesto Hard Greeen and Bjorn Lomberg's The Skeptical Environmentalist. The author of the techno-thriller is many things but being a leftist ain't one of them.

It is good to see someone as popular as this author pointing out the bad science and hucksterism behind the global warming, formerly global cooling, environuts.
I'm sure we will soon hear the Crighton is a tool of the oil industry from the MSM ...
And while it isn't getting as much stress, the fact that he addresses the very real worry of enviroterrorism is also of note. Lord knows with the likes of FoE we could be one stolen ex-Soviet bioweapon away from an attack that makes 9/11 look minor.

If there is this grand consensus among scientists, then why has the National Academy of Sciences been unable to pass resolutions saying so?
It has always appeared to me that this issue has been one of Goebbels-esque posturing rather than true facts. All of its supporters are basically fanatics, and their central argument consists primarily of reiterating the same phrases with little of no data to actually back it up. This is the only logical explanation why the global warmers get so hot under the collar when people ask the tough questions. A normal, rational person would try and counter with facts, one would think.
Like I said, I have yet to hear from any serious body of scientists, national or international, that has come to a majority conclusion on this matter. Maybe I'm wrong, but as I recall this didn't happen last conference at NAS.

There is a fascinating article from last year in which Michael Crichton talks about how the junk science craze started with SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) back in the 50's. He says true scientists did not speak up to stop it. I believe he also links junk science with second hand smoke.
Here is the article: Michael Crichton on Junk Science

Perhaps this work of fiction will help expose the fiction of global warming. Remember the impact of "The China Syndrome"?

"Every time we drive a car, use electricity from coal-fired power plants, or heat our homes with oil or natural gas, we release carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases into the air."
In other words, us being alive is killing the planet. I don't know who i hate more, trial lawyers or these scum of the earth scientists.

We hope Michael Crichton fans enjoy his new science-fiction thriller, while keeping in mind there is a very strong consensus among the vast majority of climate scientists that global warming is under way and human activity is a primary cause. Every time we drive a car, use electricity from coal-fired power plants, or heat our homes with oil or natural gas, we release carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases into the air.
Technologies exist today that can cut emissions of heat-trapping gases and make a real difference in the health of our planet. These changes often have other positive benefits such as improving air quality, saving consumers money, reducing our dependence on oil, and creating new jobs and business opportunities.
Our political and business leaders have a responsibility to help move us toward a cleaner energy future. Public investments should shift away from polluting fossil fuels to support for clean renewable energy such as wind and solar power, more fuel-efficient vehicles, and more energy-efficient technologies. People from all walks of life can play a role in slowing global warming by advocating for smarter government policies, better corporate practices, and informed consumer choices.
Add for nuclear power?

This hit job ABC is doing (on the piece before Stossel's enviro segment) on the Amish is horrible. Certianly this particular guy should have gone to jail, but they're turning this into an anti amish piece.
They're an interesting community, and it would have been interesting to hear about what they think, but ABC just want's to trash them as wierdos.
I feel like a heal watching this waiting for Stossel's piece.

Just bought the book yesterday along w/ Dean Koontz's new one. Just started Koontz, can't wait to get at this one. "Timeline" is one of my all time favorites. They absolutely destroyed it in the movie, though.

The WSJ reviewed this book today and I just bought it for my brother for Christmas at Costco. It sounds great. It's amazing how the mainstream media ignores the books that don't fit their agenda. I hadn't heard anything about this book, nor about the new DeMille book that is based on the TWA 800 story.

"My view of this is that the media is like the guy going down the street with a sign that says 'The End of the World is Near,' and he picks a date and the day comes and goes, and the world doesn't end. So he doesn't stop with the sign. He goes home, makes another sign, puts a new date on it, and starts marching again. That's the way the media is," Crichton said. He argues that researchers who study global warming often exaggerate the problem in order to get grants, often using celebrities to promote their cause.

This is simply NOT TRUE. If there is any consensus, it is the opposite. The fact is, climate scientists do not even agree that there is warming and the majority reject the concept that warming could be caused by human activity. See the Oregon Petition
