From AP:

"In a surprise move, former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik abruptly withdrew his nomination as President Bush's choice to be homeland security secretary Friday night, saying questions have arisen about the immigration status of a housekeeper and nanny he employed.

The decision caught the White House off guard and sent Bush in search of a new candidate to run the sprawling bureaucracy of more than 180,000 employees melded together from 22 disparate federal agencies in 2003.

Kerik informed Bush of his decision to withdraw in a telephone call at 8:30 p.m. EST. "I am convinced that, for personal reasons, moving forward would not be in the best interests of your administration, the Department of Homeland Security or the American people," Kerik said in a letter to the president.

The White House said Bush accepted Kerik's decision."

From what I've read, they asked him first, and he declined. Thus the nom of Kerik, his second in command, so to speak.

Just a thought - I'm sure you've considered - Ridge's stature after this run as DHS... he get's to walk away with "no attacks on my watch" This fella's gonna earn big, build up some favors and then make a move... Pres. 2008?? It's still up for grabs...

Do you know that? or you just do not like the man? Any confirmation on this?

I understand that he is not interested at this time. I believe it might have been offered to Rudy prior to Kerik.

Not a good trade-off at all! Think about it...Holy Joe as the head of HS? Far better to keep him in the Senate, where he can't do as much harm.

Time to FReep the White House!

Let's send in some emails and tell the Pres. what we want. For me, I still want the guy in the job. I can think of no one better suited to doing it than him. I can think of no one the terrorists would fear more. Send in some emails!!!

That class warfare doesn't cut it here, newbie and President Bush is hardly a "Country Club Republican"; whatever you imagine THAT term to mean.

More in the closet? Did he leave a young girl to drown? Short of that - nothing you mentioned would give me pause about the man. Evidently gray areas are only for the libs, eh? I felt better about Kerik than I did about Condi taking over State....even tho I may like her more than Powell.

Fox and others reported "past use of an undocumented housekeeper". Geez, given the past and the status of illegal immigrants everywhere and Bush wanting a guest worker program, you'd think this "illegal nanny" crap would have died politically by now.

Boy, they do play a stupid game in DC. I swear no one really cares and he'd have been confirmed easily. Which tells me there are other "real" problems that the Bush team obviously should have fleshed out before the nomination.

***"I am guessing that Kerik wanted to stiffen the borders and run the illegals out and Bush disagreed." ***

I don't think so. That would have already been discussed before the nomination.

Is it time for my "life isn't fair" talk that I give my daughter when she is really ranting about politics, MSM. dems, etc.?
