The reporter just 'sought out' someone he knew within the company would would 'go that far'.

That would mean that the reporter picked the soldiers who would speak. That doesn't seem likely.

The reporter went to the NCO in charge of the microphone and got him to pick his 'soldiers'.

This was technically a sensing session, so the soldier won't/can't/shouldn't get in trouble. But he did more harm than good. As my old First Shirt used to say, "There's one in every unit".

Acutally if you read the email, the reporter DID pick out 'my guys' as he calls them (2 soldiers).

He took them because he heard only soldiers can ask questions, so he took them as 'protection' and coached on of them on the question (he may have agreed with the premise of the question of course)

He ALSO said he sought out the General who was calling on the soliders to try to get one of 'his guys' called on, which he did.

All in the email.
