NORTHUMBERLAND — An investigation is under way today into the death of 4-year-old girl after being apparently beaten to death by her stepfather. Authorities didn’t expect to file charges today, but it is possible charges could be filed as early as today.
The homicide victim was identified as Marla Reed. She was pronounced dead shortly after 9 a.m. today in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
The girl’s stepdad, Brentt Michael Sherwood, is being held in Northumberland County Prison, where he was committed Tuesday night on unrelated probation violations.
The probation violations relate to drug use and specifically cocaine, sources close to the investigation confirmed.
Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Rosini identified Sherwood, 25, as the prime suspect in the death and added he was already in custody. "He’s not going anywhere," he said.
Rosini said charges wouldn’t be filed until an autopsy is completed. It was being done today at Geisinger.
The victim is a daughter of Heather Reed Sherwood.
Rosini said he wasn’t releasing further details until the investigation was complete.
First responders and Northumberland police were called Tuesday afternoon to the home after a 911 call came into the Northumberland County 911 Center. Initially, the child was reported to have suffered a fall and was not breathing.
I had three children and there were days that I would have gladly sold them to passing gypsies (that's sarcstic and not meant to offend anyone).
However, even in my darkest days -- and I don't remember the 80's at all -- I could not have killed a child.
Erase them for a few hours? Yep! Wish for a time machine to take me away? Yep!

It is stories like this that have helped me make the decision to stay single til my children can no longer be hurt by my choice of partner!

And I ditto the rest of your comments, as well. They may drive me crazy, but I can't imagine killing any child!
