Pro-Islamist spin at ABC

Dec. 7, 2004 — It was not what she said, but the way she looked and her manner of dress that had the crowd hooting and jeering as she addressed a conference in Paris last year.

When Salma Yaqoob, a 32-year-old British Muslim activist, took the stand at the November 2003 European Social Forum, she was taken aback by the ruckus.

As chairwoman of the Stop the War Coalition in Birmingham, England, Yaqoob was in Paris to talk about the backlash against British Muslims sparked off by the war on terror during a session titled "Dimensions of Islam." But it was her veil, or hijab, that turned into the subject of an acrimonious dispute.

This was months before France passed a controversial law banning head scarves in public schools, and Yaqoob, a psychotherapist who took up community service shortly after the 9/11 attacks, says she was rattled by the audience hostility.

"I was genuinely shocked how people reacted just because I happened to be wearing a hijab," Yaqoob recalled in a phone interview. "It was actually a very upsetting experience. It was shocking to see people so passionate and, in my view, so ignorant of basic things, basic things like etiquette. [They] felt they had a right to behave that way in the name of what they thought was freedom and liberation."

In the Netherlands — a country famed for its relaxed attitude to everything from pot smoking to prostitution — at least 14 Muslim buildings and schools were attacked in the troubled days following the killing of a Dutch filmmaker by a suspected Islamist extremist. Postings in online chat rooms showed a rising anti-Muslim feeling. "Today is the day I became a racist," read one typical message.

And when a TV contest recently asked viewers to name the "greatest Dutchman ever," they chose Pim Fortuyn — a self-avowed anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant politician who was killed by a white animal rights activist in 2002.

In neighboring Belgium, the country's highest court recently ruled the far-right Vlaams Blok party racist and stripped it of its funding and TV access rights, forcing it to disband. Party leaders say they plan to reconstitute under a new name.

In Denmark, an Islamophobic party came in third in the 2001 elections, foreshadowing Jean-Marie Le Pen's right-wing party's stunningly strong showing in the French elections the next year.

"There is definitely a rise in Islamophobia across Europe," said Liz Fekete, deputy director of the London-based Institute of Race Relations. "Muslims collectively are being blamed for the attacks on the World Trade Center, and there is a general punitive climate toward Muslims. This has manifested itself in a variety of ways. On the ground, there has been a rise in racial violence on Muslim targets across Europe. And the biggest problem is that the scale of the problem has not been acknowledged," Fekete said.

There were the crusades,

Never forget that the entire Middle East and Turkey were part of the Christian Byzantine Empire. The Crusades were defensive, and only started after most of the Byzantine Empire had been lost.

Actually makes them sound partly civilized, even when buggering goats and camels. Might give the wrong impression that they not murderous, subhuman filth.

Islam, Cult of Death Etiquette™.

That's got possibillities...

There is a big difference between Christianity and Islam, or the Bible and the Quran.

Yes, there are those who, in the so called name of Christianity, may have committed atrocities against his fellow man. However, they were not following the teachings of the Bible. The Bible does not order Christians to kill those who don't believe.Christians are to teach others about Christ, but it is a persons free will to believe or not.

With the Quran, it states that all who don't believe are infidels, and all infidels must be destroyed.

There are many on this thread who have a better understanding about Islam than I do, but the one point I just made is a good place to start in understanding the differences.

Bottom line, rejecting Jesus doesn't result in you being beheaded.

Merriam-Webster say a phobia is "an exaggerated, usually inexplicable and illogical fear...". When it is no longer illogical or exaggerated, it is no longer a phobia, but a reasonable reaction.

I stand in shock and wonder at the surreality of those in America who want to defend Islam's bloodthirsty march against human civilization.

What do they hope to gain?

The main difference between Christianity and Islam: In Christianity, God gave his only Son to redeem the sins of the world; in Islam, God wants you to give your son to punish nonbelievers.

Uhm... In the case of Islam, it's not God, but Beelzallah, the bloodthirsty Moon God and holy meteorite of Mecca.

Perhaps the numerous beheading of innocents tainted their cause as well?

Man, I'm loosing it... I've totally forgotten the correct etiquette that goes with Islamic gender and religious apartheid.

"[They] felt they had a right to behave that way in the name of what they thought was freedom and liberation."

I'm more concerned with the Islamic preachers of hate and jihad that do so under the banner of "freedom and liberation." At least these folks did not behead her.

Islam is a religion/cullture. Islam has teachings and a history open for anyone to study. Based on what we read, learn and see, we have to be from Missouri. Show me. We have to tell Muslims that we know them by their actions; their words mean nothing. To change things, they will have to change their actions, to include the actions of , yes, terrorists. They say they are a religion of peace? Show me. Until that time, it's incumbent upon he follwers of the prophet to EARN the trust of others by demonstrating peaceful and rational behavior. If they expect tolerance, they must demonstrate it first. I'm overlong.

Oh, there's that talking-point buzzword "Islamophobia" again... cutesy widdle wibberals have come up with another politically-correct label to make them Feel Good About Themselves.

We need to start a contest for a buzzword for what kind of phobia we REALLY have.

For insatance... What would be the correct word to describe "Fear Of Having Your School Invaded And Your Children Shot In The Back By Islamic Holy Men", or "Fear Of Boarding A Bus And Getting Blown To Smithereens By Islamic Chimpanzees", or "Fear Of Jumping From The 100th Floor Of A Flaming Building Ignited By Fearless Islamic Warriors", or "Fear Of Being Sprayed With Spittle By A Self-Hating Leftie-Lieberal Apologist", or...

yeah, you get it - I'm not much good with them there Big Words, Perfesser "Leela Jacinto" (what leftist bughole is she from, just out of curiousity?)... maybe you can come up with the words... I dunno...IslamoIgnitoBuildingoPhobia?

""I was genuinely shocked how people reacted just because I happened to be wearing a hijab," . . .""

If she was wearing a red hat and only terrorists wore red hats she would still be shocked. Logic must be a scarce commodity in the Muslim community.

"NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again."

It is the same problem. It's countries where religion and government are tied so tightly that have all the problems. If politicians of countries floating on oil can say look, it's not my fault you're poor and I'm filthy stinking rich, it's the West's fault. People get their religion from politicians because the two are equivalent.

On the other side of the coin you have countries where this is not the case, such as Turkey, an important US ally, and Albania, one of only four countries to send troops to the combat phase in Iraq. Although they are both predominately Muslim, they are not extreme.

I think if the US gives in an settles for an Islamic democracy in Iraq, rather than a real democracy with a Muslim population, it will tough to call it a success. You need some space between religious leaders and politicians.

The people highest on the Islamists' list to be purged are:
liberals, professors, homosexuals, atheists, and - probably - people who don't like guns.

Ironic, isn't it?
