A high rise in the Chicago Loop at 135 S. LaSalle has at least one floor on fire. Live shots show a raging fire through the windows.
This is the LaSalle Bank Building. Began just after 1830h.

This is an "older building" don't know the age at this time.
Last year, the Cook County Building fire took place and I think 6 or 9 people died.
There were NO sprinklers in that building at the time.
I think the law allows some buildings to exist with no sprinklers in this City.
Since the Cook County building fire, ALL buildings in Chicago have been required to provide electronic blue prints to the CFD so they can properly map each floor and when people call in, what the exact locations are...

Fox just said it was three alarm
There are plenty of high rises without sprinklers all over the country.
If this building had working sprinklers this would never have gotten this large.

True---
The only exceptions are schools (because of the Our Lady of the Angels ("OLA") fire of 1 December 1958.
All schools had to be retrofitted--no matter if they had been previously Grandfathered.
I ask this question out of ignorance (ignorance is salvageable; stupidity is forever). About aerial ladders I thought their reach was only 10 stories. Am I wrong?
Thta's very surprising..this is downtown LOOP, right..well..it is Chicago..the council will be a fun place tomorrow..
Chicago's ordinance exempts office buildings erected prior to 1975. That's why the County bulding (where I work) burned.
I stand corrected. The code in NYC was changed long ago..
IT looks to me like the fire has extended to the next upper floor. there is no more flame from the windows because air is being drawn in to feed the flames. I dont see any "white" smoke (steam) that tells me that the FD has water on it yet. Also, FYI, The fire codes in the city of Chicago dont require sprinklers in high rises, remember about a year ago there was a fire in a city building with a lot of lives lost?
Rapid Assault Team. Chicago FD team that immediately starts searching for people in a fire. Being reported on Chicago NBCNews. Also talking about how one commander is now assigned to see a fire through until it's out. No multiple commanders, no shift changes.

THat law will be changed tomorrow..watch..
FOX just had a blub. more to come...
Image #2
Up close shot you can see the CFD through the window. Bottom shot shows the 29th floor on fire and the rest of the building above...
Hope everyone is all right and that they have renters insurance.
Where's O. J. Simpson?
Chicago does NOT require all buildings to be equipped with sprinklers, they are still discussing it on the TV now...
Woman being interviewed now saying that three of them, ladies, were on the fire floor. Called and told CFD where they were, and the CFD came and found them took them to a fire dept controlled elevator and brought them down. One required O2 at the time. The lady said they were starting to get more and more smoke and were just starting to have trouble breathing...
News crews being moved further away. People still being treated for smoke
Lady being interviewed stated that THERE ARE NO SPRINKLERS in this building...none that she has ever seen...just glad the windows opened...
