Statistically, more heterosexual women in Connecticut have AIDS than do gay men, he said.

Is there a higher percentage of women than homosexual men with HIV? I don't believe this is true.

In sheer numbers - are there are more women (women make up approximately 50% of the population) than homosexual men (about 1-2% of the total population) with HIV? Quite possibly.

A feeble and transparent attempt to "lie without lying".

"The FDA maintains that homosexual sex is an "at risk" activity for the spread of HIV and the need to protect the blood supply takes priority over the feelings of gay men."

The FDA is absolutely correct on this.

In fact, I'd go further. . .anyone who knows they have AIDS who attempts to give blood would be charged with attempted murder.

On Saturday, a dozen students and parents gathered outside Law High School in protest, holding signs and wearing stickers reading "Gay people have blood too. ... The American Red Cross discriminates."

...and thank God they do...

You should ask anyone of those people supporting this guy whether, in an emergency situation, they would prefer to receive blood from a man who had had sex with another man or from a heterosexual. Interesting to see what the answers would be.

The policy also discriminates against intravenous drug users, people who suffer from hepatitus, and people who have aids.

The last time I tried to give blood (& I'm an O-) I was rejected (a few years back) because I had spent more than 6 months total in the UK in the last ten years. They were worried about mad cow disease and I suspect gay sex and HIV are a far bigger risk to the blood supply.

Glad these people are at least trying to protect us.

If only there was a way to set aside the blood taken from homosexuals to be given exclusively to the people who protested on behalf of high risk blood.

Shawn Lang, a member of the Connecticut AIDS Residence Coalition and co-chairman of the state’s AIDS policy group, agreed that the screening process asks the wrong questions and needs to change.

Statistically, more heterosexual women in Connecticut have AIDS than do gay men, he said.

Uh, Shawn Lang is described as "she" on the Connecticut AIDS Residential Coalition website.

Though I can understand how the paper could make a mistake...
      Shawn Lang, CARC Assistant Director

"You need to know who is wearing protection and who is not when they are engaging in sex," Lang said.

Why do you care whether a monogamous married couple are wearing protection, perv?

(With apologies to Ms. Lang, if the newspaper distorted her comments.)

This is not a new issue. It was the "gay community," led by gay activists who introduced the HIV virus into the blood supply, and infected thousands of hemophiliacs. Buy or borrow a copy of And The Band Played On for an interesting discussion of this and other aspects of the early HIV/AIDS story.

Homsexual Agenda Ping.

I didn't read the whole article yet, just the excerpt. Pretty much tells everything: homosexual (teenager, I wonder what his history is) isn't allowed to give blood, as per rules and AFAIK, laws. Good - protect blood supply from those more likely to have not only AIDS but other blood borne diseases such as Hep C.

Idiots protest. AIDS - the politically correct disease. I guess vicious fools want us all to get AIDS.

Let me and ItsOurTimeNow know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.

Would it be good journalistic practice to catch these kinds of misleading statements? After all, after Zell Miller's electrifying convention speech, all the AP and other organizations would focus on is the "fact" that Dick Cheney had supported cutting a few weapons programs in the past. They weren't quoting someone else, they added that little "fact check" themselves. Surely someone could have done the same with "Ms." Lang.

According to The Connecticut Department of Health, there were 13844 reported cases of AIDS through June 2004. 22% of them were men who sleep with men. Yet these make up no more than 2.8% of the population (to be generous). 24% were heterosexual women. Yet these make up 51.6% of the population of Connecticut.

I go to Costa Rica every year which bars me from donating blood regardless of the fact that I may never see a mosquito and the malaria rate down there is extremely low.

I don't want a tranfusion from a gay guy. I think the risks of getting AIDS from that are much higher and more serious than getting malaria from a tourist.

Fine. The only ones who can give blood to gay people are...other gay people. Otherwise, keep the poisoned blood out of the supply.

These people are beyond stupid.

Does the name "Patient Zero" ring a bell with anyone?

Patient Zero was the Air Canada steward who almost single-handidly is responsible for the AIDS epidemic.

In the early 80s, he had copious, unprotected sexual liasons with hundreds of men. All the while infected up to the eyeballs.

THose hundreds of men had unprotected sex with thousands of otherf men. The rest is history.
