Half of all Britons have never heard of Auschwitz killings

NEARLY half of Britons have never heard of Auschwitz, according to a poll.

The survey uncovered shocking levels of ignorance about the Holocaust, and among women and the under-35s the figure is as high as 60 per cent. But Jewish figures in Scotland yesterday questioned the results of the research and said more information than ever was available about the fate of Jews in Nazi death camps.

Of the 4,000 adults surveyed, 45 per cent said they had never heard of Auschwitz.

The research was commissioned by the BBC in advance of Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January, which marks the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Sara Jacobs, co-director of the Glasgow Lubavitch Centre, a Jewish educational organisation, said: "I am very surprised to hear those figures. I would have thought the Holocaust was more likely than ever to appear on school curriculums.

Well, apparently not all are so "sophisticated and well informed" to search the forum on keyword 'Auschwitz' and find that this story has already been posted. Pity, isn't it.

While a sure sign of ignorance, I wouldn't say this was near as alarming as the percentage of Americans who couldn't place the decade in which WWII occurred, say, nor name the current Vice-President.

I know the average person is a dumb as a rock, but it's nice to see the myth of European superiority take a hit. They don't all sit around sipping tea and reading Chaucer.

Curious minds want to know: what percentages of Indonesians? Bolivians? Nepalese? Marshall Islands citizens?

Maybe, but the point of this is to make fun of people in Briton.

I wonder what's the percentage of the French people ever heard of the Normandy Landing? And how many Americans are buried there?

Briton = A british citizen.

Britain = My country.

We either have a lot of stupid uneducated people or a lot of holocaust deniers. I wonder.

Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Hmm... let's see Auschwitz, Dachau, Bergin-Belsen, Meidenek, Buchenwald, Sobiborg, and Treblinka (forgive the spelling). That's just off the top of my head. Can anyone name any other big ones with out cheating and looking up the info?

I see that you have incurred the ire of one of the few individuals on this site spend a majority of their time complaining about what others post. They have no concept that not everyone searches the lists of what has been posted but instead views the list of most recent posts to see what news has been posted. I guess they spend all of their time just watching the posts and complain when someone repeats a post. 'Tis a shame they have nothing more important to do.

Some of these same people love to use the word "newbie". They operate under the fantasy that only those who have been using this site for a considerable period of time have anything of value to add. Based upon their "newbie" criteria, one could expect that a post that they did not like would elicit the "newbie" comment even if it came from President Bush.

In a few words, some of these "individuals" need to grow up and act like adults and not spoiled brats.

Is it possible the people who know even the basic facts of history can't be bothered to answer mind numbing poll questions like this? Should anyone approach me in the street to ask such a question, I'd give them the shortest of shrift.

And knowing the sarcastic nature of us Brits, I'm willing to believe that many respondents weren't entirely serious.

All that said, the masses are asses.

Gee, I'm awfully sorry I typed that in wrong. Is there any way you could forgive me?
