Well, last post was to myself.. duh..

will prolly stay in hotel/motel. I have two attorney cousins (both female) who live in greater DC area. both super libs & is would just not be a good place to hang hat with them & their lib spouses.

You better make reservations soon. I'd guess that rooms will be scarce in and around D.C. I would ask if you could stay where I'm staying, but the niece is Jack's and I don't feel particularly comfortable even asking her to put me up. I only do it out of necessity. I understand that she & her husband have been having some problems. I wanted to stay with Jack's brother in Leesburg and have him escort me to the ball, but he didn't take my hint when he was here for Thanksgiving. I may hit him with another purposal yet. I might even beg.

Okay, haven't done this kind of thing before (formal occasion in cold weather -- don't have much of that here!) So what sort of coat will I need?

Anyone have any advice?

My dress is black with shoulder straps, velvet. Do I need a long formal coat? Will a longer nice black wool coat suffice?
